I am writing a fanfic and in one of my chapters I would like to expand on the part with the crystals floating in mid-air. I really haven’t been able to find any information about it. Like why are the crystals floating and why does they lights make the crystals drop? It is such an odd and yet awesome scene and I want to get it as right as I can!

I always assumed it was due to residual PKE hanging out.
For instance, a ghost had been there running a muck, but had left behind enough psychokenetic energy (either on the items or just in that particular area) that the items were stuck in mid air. That’s why there was no trap and no ghost. So the equipment they used nullified that energy and returned everything to normal.
Why they didn’t put a pad or some pillows under the stuff so it wouldn’t just shatter when it fell: because they’re jerks.

That is pretty much all there is to the story part. The 4 things that they used to do the operation are called in the Ghostbusters Community “Tripod Traps”. They were never given a real name.
