We know that a proton beam is very destructive, it can burn through wood in seconds, has the potential to melt people’s faces off and if the streams are crossed, well, total protonic reversal. I’ve been thinking of something what could quite well happen in the field so to speak, that could be a lot worse that total protonic reversal. Say the guys are out catching one particularly nasty spook, and a proton beam ends up straying onto the pack of another ghostbuster. What do you think would happen or what cool thing do you think should or could happen?
I think that the casing of the cyclotron being damage would cause protons to become unstable resulting in a total systems failure and the pack would either explode or fold in on itself, both bad news for the guy wearing it
Interesting question. I would like to think that Egon would have designed the casting of the pack to withstand the proton stream. And that only the hoses or replaceable attachments on the exterior of the casting would be damaged and have to be replaced.
On the other hand, watching the proton stream scorch pretty much everything it touches I’m inclined to believe a Chernobyl type explosion would result…
Well, you’d surely lose containment of the nuclear material, whether there’s an explosion or not. This would contaminate a certain area, depending on these factors----how much nuclear material is lost?, if there is an explosion?, and what is the wind speed(if outdoors) to carry the radiation downwind. I think it would be like a dirty bomb, but certainly not like an A-bomb or anything.

Well, in the Ghostbusters universe, there’d probably be a massive explosion causing a serious amount of damage. Then, from under the rubble, the ghostbusters will emerge slightly scorched and disoriented. The guy who was wearing the pack that got hit would probably have the remains of the A.L.I.C.E. frame hanging from his shoulders.
In the real world, I’m gonna have to agree with the others and say Chernobyl, or in the very least what enchanted unicorn said with the “dirty bomb” effect.
I would imagine egon would have designed a failsafe incase something like this would happen…even though they didn’t properly test their equipment until their first job
Being nuclear I thought there would be an explosion, and he thought there would be a failsafe BUT the leaking nuclear fallout would renaimate the dead and begin the zombie apocolypse. To which I said well hey theyve got potentially unlimited ammo in the other packs and Venkman would want to expand the buisness to xombie clean up…for a price of course
From the appearance of the pack, it almost seems like their “cast iron”, but probably more specifically engineered and constructed from lead, which is pretty widely used as shielding for nuclear materials and radiation sources. Go in any hospital and try to get a cell phone signal in the radiology department. You will be hard pressed because the sheet rock panels in the walls actually have lead sheets in them. In my opinion, in theory, if it’s shielding the interior contents of the cyclotron, surely it could shield the user from a direct blast. Would probably heat up like nobody’s business, and all parts that aren’t lead shielded would surely vaporize. Who knows, maybe the cosmetic plates are actually the shielding and in the event of a possible containment failure, they seal off the synch gen and cyclotron on the interior. The possibilities are limitless… lol
