Well, the game describes Gozer/Stay Puft as an outsider avatar, so destroying Gozer in our plane of existance would not destroy Gozer in the ghost world (as that can be considered a higher plane of existence). The power of any avatar (if we’re speaking in strictly Ghostbusters terms) would depend on how much PKE energy has been gathered. In terms of a gateway being opened, I should think the size of the gate matters to how much PKE can be allowed through at once, rather than in terms of physical size. Without the antenna of Dana’s old apartment, I don’t think Gozer gained any more strength than it naturally would have, destructor form or no, but there was enough PKE to open a portal for Gozer to come through. I think Gozer may have needed Ilyssa to focus the PKE from the mandala nodes towards itself, rather than towards its automated goal of breaking down the barrier between our world and the ghost world (which is, of course, what allowed Gozer to come back in the first place). At least, that’s what I like to think. I also think that Gozer is probably gone for good this time. I look at it as Shandor having destroyed a weakened Gozer in its own realm.
My take on the question is… perhaps since Gozer wasn’t summoned by her usual minions (Zuul and Vinz Clortho) she wasn’t as powerful. Knowing that Gozer relied on Zuul & Vinz for summoning her and distributing some of their power to her and the destructor form, Shandor may have put the mandala in place to help give Gozer the power she needed to be free of the summoners & achieve ultimate power. We all know that after Gozer failed twice Shandor subsequently gave up on her and used the mandala to channel that power to himself.
Ilyssa fits in because I believe they said Shandor blood was needed to activate the nodes in certain places. (hotel & museum) I don’t think they literally meant blood, though… I think they meant that it had to be someone of Shandor lineage to physically activate the node. It very well could’ve been Shandor himself possessing Ilyssa (since she had no recollection of the events while in those locations) and doing whatever needed to be done to activate those nodes.
Another possibility for Gozer’s relative weakness in GBVG:
Remember that just a few years before, Gozer was blown to smithereens in a complete particle reversal. Maybe Gozer just simply hadn’t had the time to regenerate to anything approaching full power. Seven or eight years is not much time at all to an immortal being. Shandor’s mistake may have been that he still thought in mortal time terms, and tried again waaay too soon.
I don’t think that contradicts the story at all it seems like that is exactly what was going on and how it was described.
Also if you wanna nit pick Gozer last time took the form of Stay Puft but the gate was open and feeding him the entire time. Closing the gate was the only way to close off the power all the way; it would be a safe assumption that even f they burned all the marshmallow off Stay Puft something would keep coming. Well this time there was nothing really feeding that energy. That also kinda points towards the manifestation thing again as nothing had been fully activated to bring Gozer back at that time.
does anyone else see a resemblance to Megan Fox in Illyssa?
JoeGhostbuster I see Megan Fox everywhere. It’s why I always smile.
Illyssa is probably the only lead cast member that actually doesn’t resemble her voice actress… lol
Gozers return was an attempt by Shandor to kill two birds with one stone: Get the Ghostbusters out the way, get hold of Ilyssa. Shandor says at the end. “I did but he failed melaughs twice!” referencing his return. But, also remember that the cutscenes were rendered before the playable parts were finished. The mirrors on Ecto-1, Slimblower tops being different, Peter acting as if he got to the main hall by himself and egon showing up out of nowhere at the museum. Heck theres even cutscenes missing, Chef DeForrest was supposed to have a more impressive intro!
The game has its plotholes but it cant be helped, things changed as it was made. Oh and gozer was not at full power when the ghostbusters first faced him as he wasnt fully through the doorway, what they faced in the game was not only weak as he was in there first battle(i dont think proton streams would work on a full fledged god) but also hes weakened from there first battle and there packs have been upgraded since there first battle with him.
And after those 2 mispelled and slightly confusing paragraphs i have one more point, the mandala was a back up plan that needed time to activate. Shandor must of been controlling Gozer to a degree as he had the travellers skull at the end. If he had used the as yet not fully charged mandala to summon Staypuft then its understandable that he would have been weaker. This could also explain why gozer had failed him twice. And they must have returned to the Sedgwick at sum point after the first film to re catch Slimer, but that doesnt explain why hes at the firehouse in the second film.
Damn i type too much…
