introduction and Proton pack lighting/sound question

Hi there,

I just joined the forum. I live in LA, my wife and I love Ghostbusters, and she had the idea to cosplay a ghostbuster this year at Comic Con. I actually have a question for you guys related to that. We originally wanted to build all of our props from scratch (proton pack, ghost trap, etc…) But seeing as how the convention is a little over 2 weeks out, I bit the bullet and bought a proton pack off of eBay. :vinzclortho:

Anyway, my question is this… The seller told me that the lighting kits for the pack and the wand are gbfans lighting kits from five or so years back. I wanna purchase the sound kit and make this thing loud and proud, but are these 5+ year old lighting kits likely to be compatible with the current sound kit? I don’t have a picture of the lighting kit for the pack, but the wand lighting kit is shown in the last picture in the item listing. Sorry, I haven’t gotten this thing in the mail yet so I don’t have my own pics yet to give you a better idea. Thank you in advance.

Seller most likely lied to you, or was incorrect about the electronics.

Those are not GBFans Electronics kits that I can tell.

That being said, the GBFans sound board is very easily compatible with most other kits out there. It will just require some wiring, and won’t be plug and play.

Cool, thanks. I work with electronics too (classic videogames and pinballs). re-wiring or soldering shouldn’t be out of my repertoire. If I ppurchase the sound kit, is there a detailed set of instructions/schematics what have you for this kinda job?

Instructions are here: http://www.gbfans.com/images/shop/packsoundboardinstructions.pdf

There is no telling what kind of light kit is inside however. It could be as simple as tapping into existing switches. Though since the wand doesn’t appear to have a light kit installed, it might be easiest to get the wand kit, sound board and the ribbon cable to connect them. That way you only have to worry about the connection to the power cell / cyclotron lights.

Thank you. This is incredibly helpful. I actually got another, much more accurate looking wand from another ebayer along with a ghost trap kit I’m gonna throw together, so maybe I will just get the gbfans wand lighting kit along with the sound kit and save myself the hassle of trying to figure out the other one of unknown origin. Are the electronics in the gbfans pack lighting kit fairly simple, as you said just a bank of switches that drive the leds? The less stuff I gotta guy out and replace, the more I can spend on the rest of the costume. So far I’ve spent more on this thing than my refridgerator :vinzclortho: money well spent imo, but just trying to be resourceful

Side note, as I read these instructions, I’m kinda starting to fully realize how bad ass this thing is!

The kits are pretty much all inclusive except for the sound board. The wand kit has all the LEDs and switches, you just have to add power. All 3 boards can connect together using ribbon cables to simplify all the connections. Its more than just some switches each board has a microprocessor that allows for all kinds of configuration and variation.

Hey, so the ebayer that I bought the pack from told me that both kits were made by a forum member named r2devo. I’m reading through the instructions and it looks like the sound kit has a mode to work with this lighting kit. Am I correct about that?

Also I googled the r2devo kit, and the pictures of that lighting kit are identical to the eBay picture I posted of the lighting kit for the wand. So I’m guessing it must have 2 of them (one for the wand and one for the pack. Has anyone tried this kit setup (2 r2devo kits) with the gbfans sound kit?

I’m pretty sure there’s other posts on the r2devo kits on here. Try searching the forums with the search function at the top right.

Oh, and welcome
