Jacob's NEWB proton pack build, lessons learned, mistakes...

The shell looks very warped.

I think you would have been better off with a Studio Creations vac formed shell.

i agree

i honestly dont see much difference between his pack and mine. yes, there ARE differences (and of course my pack isnt finished…) but they look pretty close to me. granted his has more aluminum, but I couldnt justify the price difference just to say mine has an all aluminum thrower.

thanks dude!

Take it from the people that have studied the packs extensively, they just don’t compair. As an example, here’s a universal studios pack:

Ostensibly more or less “the same” shell you have.

Now here’s a GB2 pack from the same exhibit:

Baring the obvious additions like the orange reflectors there are marked differences in the shape and quality of the packs.

You don’t, but most of the people around here can and do.

Will the general public? No.

Will they believe it’s a highly accurate pack? Sure.

Is it true? Nope.

Should you continue to insist your pack can stand up to a “Heavy” pack? I wouldn’t advise it.

People aren’t necessarily trying to knock you for being inaccurate, they are trying to help you. Warped parts are unacceptable unless they are marked and sold as such and with a discount.

I realize that if you want it quick, you can’t be choosy and seek out the best of the best.

And that’s fine, not everyone needs to have the most accurate pack. But claiming there is little difference between your discount parts and the finest example of a pack created thus far… it’s poppycock.

Is there a difference between Empire Strikes Back and Phantom Menace?

i dont know what that means

Jacob, work with the parts you have - the only person you want to impress is yourself ( and your wife, since you spent a good deal of time and money on this). Have fun building this. There’s always next time to get it “right.”

thanks for the kind words mate. i’m a “halloweenie” so i wont be out at cons. but it seems the biggest complaint everyone has is about my sh1tty shell. luckily, if I decide to, I can eventually buy a NICE shell and just swap everything over. I spent a good bit of time making the pack so that it was solid, and EVERYTHING but the PPD is bolted in to place (not glued) so I can easily swap parts from one shell to another.

maybe after Halloween I’ll start keeping an eye out for a good shell. everything else i’m perfectly happy with so far.

thanks again!

Make what you need to make, if it makes you happy. I think your first post noting that this would be a good checklist for the Halloween folks is pretty accurate.

If you’re only making this for Halloween, though, I’m not sure why you’re being such a supposed stickler for details - you might as well just stick some random wires and stickers on your shell and call it a day - most people don’t know the finer details of the pack, and if that’s your intended audience, why go to all the trouble?

you pretty much nailed it. this is mostly a halloween pack… but since its something i’ve wanted for a LONG time, i want it too look good. i want the right parts, right stickers, etc… if there is a “wave” in the gearbox, I can live with that.

Well I guess my point is that you’re either half-assed about it, or you’re not. If you can’t afford well made parts, that’s fine, but why spend a bunch over all for things you want to replace down the line? If you “have to” be a GB this Halloween, why not just do a good enough but cheap job this time around and then spend the real time/money on quality stuff?

really the only weak link on my pack is the shell (and I may or may not replace some of the thrower knobs with aluminum instead of resin). everything else is about as good as it gets (minus aluminum parts). so its not really a half assed pack. the only thing people have bitched about so far is my shell which I can agree on. swapping parts on to a good shell could easily be achieve in a few hours.

As Winston would say… “YESSSSS!”

Jacob King:

Fellow Haunter here. Your pack looks sweet. Don’t even listen to all the “screen accurate” crap on this forum. This site is a great place to get ideas and to see tons of reference material, but it is full of haters. Seems like its almost as bad as the Imperial 501st now. :frowning:

Anyway dude, wear you pack with pride, because I have NEVER seen a real “screen accurate” pack, because on the screen they shoot lazers and catch ghosts. It’s about having fun, so go have fun.

CUZ BUSTIN MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD!

Frankly I think the problem here, aside from several mistakes demonstrated, is the fact that he’s supporting scam artists and scumbags.

thank you for putting that out there!

bold and enlarged for emphasis. you get no rewards for white knighting people like jacob king, who’s proven time and time again, his being here is a waste of everyone’s valuable time.

the gall alone, of him to say that his pack is the best one here:

knowing what it’s made of, when ACTUAL fantastic and flawless packs have none of them on it, is proof enough.

thanks Darth! (I’m in Dallas if you ever need any help with a pack).

as far as scam artist… how so? if you’re referring to videobob, what did he do wrong? he copied a copy. lol, everyone on here building packs is just copying something thats been done already.

Yep, the downhill just started really steeply… Recasters are scum, copying someone’s work to their own benefit. Try to imagine it for yourself… You make a 110% accurate shell, from scratch, with thousands of hours time on studying the screengrabs, going to the exhibits etc.

Then you decide to sell your own handiwork, so that others can have the same, quality gear.

How would you like it if you found out that some jerk bought your work, and copied it, and made poor quality parts to sell for himself?? Without your permission???

..And no, the answer is NOT ‘he bought it, he can do with it as he likes’

As a member of the 501st and mod of this forum I find this statement ingorant in the extreme. Aside from the fact that the 501st has costume standards required for membership(and if you consider that eliteist it’s obviously not the group for you) and this site doesn’t, people only started bitching at Jacob when he made the claim that his pack “is one of the best ones here”. You can’t come on to any public forum that’s existed as long as this one, make a sweeping statement like that and expect NOT to cause controversy amongst the long-time regulars. We don’t “hate” on inaccurate packs UNLESS THEY’RE DECLAIRED ACCURATE by the creator. If it’s declared a “low budget” or “junk” pack that’s fine and usually very appreciated. Please stop perpetuating negative stereotypes.
