Lifegard Pass II alternatives

Just thinking around the subject since the Lifegards run between 40-60 bucks so far in my explorations. What would be an acceptable alternative for, say, a Video game build? Given the circut board, holster and wires that this entails, wouldn’t something close serve the purpose?

For example, a Nerf gun Clip. These can come in bright yellow in the first place, and aside from the top of the unit seem pretty similar in general to a Pass II. Just a thought here, but I’d like some feedback from the experts.

For comparison:

Lifegard Pass II

You could always just pick up a resin Lifegard from Irricanian, it’s a much more affordable option than a real one.

I didn’t see them offered on his site. I would surely consider any cheaper alterantives.

Excellent! Thanks, I guess I will keep checking on them until there are some in stock.

Meanwhile, I do some experimenting.

So, plan B. I bought a Resin Lifegard II from Ebay.

It is unpainted, anyone have suggestions for the color paint I should be looking at?

…Yellow?

Grey, if you want to be accurate to the rolling stone cover :stuck_out_tongue:

Yellow I gathered, I guess I was looking for suggestions as to type of paint, and shade of yellow.

Hahah sorry, it was too good to pass up. I figure any not-blindingly bright yellow would be fine for it, then using a paintbrush for the finer details (like the On/Off/Alarm rotate button). Krylon makes spray paint that you use on plastic, as far as I know - but just give it a bit of time and I’m sure your question can be answered properly with an accurate answer.

Still on the hunt for a Lifegard but I made up one using the Nerf dart clip. Not 100% cannon but I think it looks alright. Got to hit it with some more paint and will get it posted when everything dries. Used a top off of a travel sized bottle of baby shampoo for the ■■■■.

I grabbed a resin cast on eBay last week. Search every day as its worth it.

Believe me I do. Probably spend too much time on there.

There are a few threads here where members have built then out of wood and they look great. I built mine out of styrene.

I’ll probably do a wooden one at some point. Nerf clip didn’t come out that bad and at the time it was handy.

This thread would benefit from some size comparisons. Either some measurements of both, or better yet, I would love to see a pic of the Nerf clip next to a real Lifegard (or a resin one).

I found a real Pass II in my price range, but it needed an awful lot of cleaning and a touchup on the black lettering. I used black spray-paint, sprayed onto a Q-tip and then applied to the raised letters while it was still wet. Worked surprisingly well. I made a couple of boo-boos which were easily cleaned up with solvent after they dried.

I thought this trick might be helpful to anyone painting a resin casting of a real one, too.
