modifying a shell

hey guys, does anyone know if there would be danger in scraping a shell if i wanted to modify it to make it more accurate? i have a mike nelson shell, which has the detail coat, then resin and then fiberglass inside the shell. if i wanted to say, round out the corners of the gear box and crank gen, as well as the ribs and so on. i know i will be going through the detail coat in most places, and if i were to do this, would i risk ruining the shell? would the detail coat start separating from the resin inside?? any warnings, tips or advice in the matter would be appreciated! thanks in advance!!

if i understand you right, just use a file and you should be fine.

Even if you go through and make a hole, it wouldn’t be hard to patch it up with some bondo and a bit of fibreglass.

A file would work of your too worried you can build the back up with two part epoxy putty.

Detail coats are just to make sure there’s an even layer on the outside of the shell with no bubbles. I’ve chopped up and repositioned parts on pack shells with no problems, you just have to fill and putty the holes.

In cases where there are larger wear-throughs, I’ve used a small bit of fiberglass from the patch kits they sell in automotive stores to reinforce from the inside. Then just bondo the outside to smooth it out completely.
