I have been working on a ghostbusters uniform and proton pack from scratch for the past few months. It’s coming together nicely and plan to have it make it’s debut next month, Halloween.
However, my 4 year old son is also a fan of ghostbusters (mainly the cartoon) and he told my wife that he wanted to be a Ghostbuster for halloween and she went out and (sigh) bought one of those hideous Rubie’s ghostbusters halloween costume. I would return it, but the store has a no-return policy on all halloween costumes.
So, now my challenge is to try to make my son’s costume as nice as possible. Anyone try to do this before? Any suggestions?
As someone figured out the perfect recipe to dye the costume to be more beige and less yellow? I have ordered a name tag and ghostbusters shoulder patch, but I’m not sure what to do with the ghostbuster iron-on logos that come with this costume? Is there an easy way to get rid of them? I thought about painting over them with beige/khaki paint. (assuming I can get the color better)
I’m not to concerned with the inflatable pack. My son is only 4 so i wouldn’t want him to carry anything heavier and take away from the trick or treating experience. I am ordering some red circle-shaped reflectors to glue onto the cyclone to make it feel more legit. (since I can’t really put lights inside an inflatable plastic pack)
It was fairly easy finding belts, gloves, elbow pads, etc for my pack since I am an adult, but it’s much harder finding any of these that would fit a 4 year old.
Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Since his costume isn’t going to be as accurate as yours, just have fun with it. You know that people will ogle at the fact that there’s a miniature Ghostbuster romping the neighborhood. I like the reflector idea by the way
It would be neat if you could make a quick cardboard ghost trap for his candy bucket though (if you have time). You could leave the top open and just have him bump it into another bag in between houses.
I know his costume won’t be as accurate, but it would be nice if his costume and mine actually looked SIMILAR. Plus, he might be jealous that I have this fancy detailed costume and his is so plain and boring. The biggest difference is my suit is khaki and his is yellow. I feel like some sort of bleaching/dying would help.
I ordered an extra small belt that is similar to the pistol belt. Some keychain fobs, a small keychain flashlight. Maybe take a pair of socks and make them into elbow pads. (I still have the grey dye that i used for my elbow pads) I also am planning on replacing the proton pack plastic black arm straps with olive green military straps. I like your idea about the ghost trap. I’ll try to add that to my to-do list. Halloween will be here in no time!
So if you’re worried about the colour of his suit, Rit Colour Stripper works pretty good as long as you follow the instructions. You could get Rit liquid Tan and liquid Pearl Grey to make your khaki mix. A simple use of Google will get you the mixture ratio of those two colours to get khaki. It’ll be mostly Tan with a splash of Pearl Grey.
The socks idea sounds like a good one. Will be looking forward to seeing pix of you and your son 'Bustin together in a few shots.
