I’m sure I shared this after it happened, but not the entire story.
Back in October of 2009, my friend and I traveled to New York to meet Dan Aykroyd. He and his father were doing a lecture on ghosts and talking about their book.
My friend and I hit the road early for the six hour drive. I think we listened to the ghostbusters soundtrack for about half of the trip and reminisced.
We got to Staten Island and took the ferry to Manhattan.
Lots and lots of people asked to get photos with us and talked to us. We got everything from “are you real ghostbusters?” to people telling us about their paranormal experiences.
On our way to the lecture, we spotted the museum of art from Ghostbusters II.
We finally got to the place and hours ahead of time. The employees working were really cool and let us hang out where the lecture was going to take place.
Waiting. When it was close to showtime, we were forced to go downstairs and wait in line. This kind of sucked because the line was long and we ended up being at the end. This was limited seating and there were only a 100 tickets sold, so it wasn’t too bad. When we got back into the room, we looked for a couple seats and the only ones left were a couple in the front row. How’d that happen? When Dan came out he thanked everyone for coming out, then he said, “I especially want to thank the ghostbusters for coming.” and pointed to us. One of the best moments of my life.
After the lecture, there was a book signing. I was excited and couldn’t wait so I took the chance and approached Dan as he was leaving the stage. I introduced myself and asked him if he’d sign my Stantz suit. He did and asked if I was going back to the signing. I told him I’d see him back there.
Signing my friend’s suit.
Dan signed the book and the Belushi book that I got for my dad for Christmas a few years ago. He signed it and I gave it to my dad on Christmas that year.
Yes, that’s a can of ecto energy drink.
After the show we revisited the museum of art.
And then we found the firehouse.
It was one of the best days. I could of wrote a lot more, because there were so many awesome things about that day, but this is already too long.
Mr. Aykroyd is one of the kindest, classiest, coolest, and most down to earth person I’ve ever met. Ghostbusters will always be my favorite and Dan validated my childhood that day.
Also, one night I was looking at Dan Aykroyd videos on YouTube and found this. I always wished I had gotten a video of meeting him, and it turns out that I did.
Thanks for everything, Mr. Aykroyd!
