I’ve never customised action figures before but always wanted to give it a go. This is still a work in progress but thought I’d show you all what I’ve come up with so far.
Found these 5" Dr Who figures on eBay and though they would make a good base. They have pretty good articulation and are cheap and plentiful on eBay.
I figured the guy on the right would make a good base for Pete, Egon and Winston and the larger, heavyset one would make a good Ray.
Now I sure you’ve all noticed that the bigger pig man is taller that the other one. So wanting to keep the guys all in the right scale I cut big chunks out of his thighs and cut his feet off at the ankles.
So I’ve stuck Rays original Kenner boots back on and gave him some gloves from another figure.
Then, after much milliput, filing and sanding. I’ve ended up with this.
as you can see I’ve filed off the original pocket and used green stuff to make new ones. I’ve also sculpt the the bottom of the leg to match the tucked in look.
Iv’e already cut Egon’s boots off and mated them onto the pig figure. The only mod for Pete was to file off the breast pocket. I know it’s not like the cartoon but I’m gonna leave the bottom of his legs untucked like the movie.
I also spent ages filing down Egon’s hips, legs and arms to thin him down a bit.
Great recipe. They look surprisingly meshed for combining parts from two toy lines decades apart.
On Egon, you might consider also making his arms longer in addition to thinning them down. Particularly the forearms. It would be the same technique that you used to shorten Ray’s legs, only done in reverse. Maybe lose some of the ‘blousing’ above the cuffs, as if his suit fit his longer arms better than Peter’s.
I’ve actually posted the wrong pic as I’ve already trimed Egon’s cuff down and generally filed down a lot of the detail in his suit. The aim was to make the suit look a little less baggy. Pete doesn’t have them lower arms now either and both have new breast pockets.
The primer has shown up a few areas to the bodies that need some attention. So I’ll fix them later.
Been swapping few parts around so Venkman now has the lower arms and gloves from the larger pig figure. While Winston has the upper arm/shoulders form the larger figure. Although I don’t think it comes across too well in the photo, It gives Winston broader shoulders compared to Pete and Egon.
I think Ray’s arms need shortening. He looks a bit like an ourangutan at the mo. I also would of liked to of made Ray a little shorter, but I felt I was running the risk of making his legs look too out of proportion with his body
Thanks very much. So far I’m quite please with how they’re shaping up.
I went to games workshop yesterday to get some paint only to discover it’s closed on Mondays and Tuesday’s! Grrrrrrrrrrrr! Might be a few weeks before I do anything else to these as I’m off on holiday in a couple of weeks and I’ve got some other little protects to finish before I go.
Well the guys themselves are all done. Next I’ll knock up some belts and start working on the equipment. I’ve also got an idea for Janine but I’m waiting on donner parts to arrive and I’m on the hunt for a power pack Janine I can use.
