Now that you have it painted, grab the mustard from the fridge.
Dab it on the silver wherever you want paint chips on the parts. Take a picture. Let it dry, and THEN hit it with the flat black… you’l be able to scrape the black easily off where the mustard is on the pack. Use the pic you took as a reference, so you know where you put the mustard on!
Good tip. Personally, I’ve always preferred toothpaste as I heard mustard can stain it a little bit. Never tried it, though, so I don’t know for sure.
Looking good so far. I, too, am working off of a Studio Creations shell. Accuracy be damned. If I’ve learned anything from my previous costumes (I have a couple Star Wars costumes as well.) it’s that most of the people you’ll see on the street don’t know anything. The one in ten people who actually know what you are won’t notice the inaccuracies and the rest will just think you’re a robot or something. lol
You may also soften some of the “paint chips” with 400 sandpaper (dry). Also some dry brushing (both near chips and away, specially on corners) can help you to soften/blend and make the weathering more dramatic and realistic. You can sand some and leave some like that. Try to figure out what parts of the pack would receive more abuse than others under heavy use (parts like the bumper, cyclotron rings, corners, areas close to knobs, etc.)
Oh, don’t forget to get Fuller’s Earth! That thing does wonders! It cost about a buck and adds years of heavy use to any pack!
