My Visit to the Firehouse!

It is! It was built centuries ago, one of the first double door garages in New York! Yes, I’m aware it only has one garage. There’s as reason! Varrick street wasn’t it’s first location! It was build where the World Trade Center is currently. The building was actually sliced in half (You can see in the pictures, or in person, the oddly colored bricks; and the fact that the trim ends on the left wall. Hehe.) and MOVED there. How? I have no idea!

One of the firefighters was nice enough to give me a mini tour, and let me sit in the engine. He told me some wise words. “don’t push the big red button.” It was the sirens, in the little garage it’s LOUD. I got a good example of it when I was near the building and they had a call. I’ve visited the place many of times, still fun every time.

Around 1910, to be a bit more accurate. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m also curious as to how they moved the building, presumably brick by brick… but why then was it downsized?

I believe there’s also a photograph, pre-move of the station, showing it’s complete facade.

They downsized the fire house to broaden the street next to it.

This is all news to me!

A lot of the info mentioned here came from the segment of “Secrets of New York” that was on telly… last year? I think.

My brother visited the firehouse for me earlier this year when he was on holiday in the US for a month. He brought back pics and a T-shirt! One day I will go there!!! One day!!!

The firehouse was once indeed a double bay firehouse, i can confirm it from looking at city records since before the “Secrets of NY” eppy came out.

i live in the bronx so ive been to the firehouse a few times. they always let anybody in to see the inside and take pics if you ask. just have 2 knocc on the side door  the onyl time they wont let anybody is if theyre eatin!

They got some good cooks there too, they border some of the best Soho/Tribeca resturants to the north and little Italy to the Northeast.

I went there back in '97, and they were all cool. They even gave me one of the Ladder 8 shirts, the original one with the full graphic on the chest before they made them smaller. Still have it, though it’s two sizes too small now. Such nice guys, they even “autographed” my looseleaf divider!

Definitely worth making the trip for all GB fans. If you’re on the downtown #1 train, get off at Franklin Street at the back exit, it is right across the street (the side). If you’re on the uptown plat, get off in the front of the train, you will be directly across from it (front)!

Trivia, since someone mentioned the Secrets of New York ep, it was also featured in “Seinfeld” where Kramer goes to work as a firefighter!
