My Visit to the Firehouse!

Hey hey! Pretty new around here, and I got some blessings from a few regulars here to go ahead and post about my little visit to the Firehouse so here goes  Considering the fact that you are browsing this forum, I don’t think I need to explain myself when I say that visiting the actual Firehouse itself was the Completion of my Personal Nerd Mecca XD

That’s tiny little me in front of the big bay doors of the firehouse, which is still a fully functioning firehouse, albeit, a tiny one. It only holds one fire engine!

image

The firehouse’s logo even pays homage to the films! (you can see it on the ground to my left in the previous pic)

This plaque actually choked me up a little. It’s in honor of one of the firemen who gave his life during 9/11. It’s mounted on the right side wall outside the bay doors (you can see it on my right in the first photo). The street the firehouse sits on is named for him.

Look! I’m doing my HOLY CRAP I’M A FANTARD face! After taking a bunch of shots outside, my friends and I sheepishly knocked on the door to see if anyone was home… Surprisingly, one of the firemen not only answered, but allowed me to come inside and look around and take pictures! I was honestly feeling really shy and kind of dorky knocking on the door of the 8 Hook & Ladder, then blabbing awkwardly to the fireman that I was a HUGE GB fantard that wanted to look around inside his station XD They were real good sports about it

image

The interior of the building… (on the side the sign hangs on) it’s so TINY!

image

The infamous firepole (obviously not the one used in the movie). I didn’t bother asking if I could slide down the pole… I figured I’d imposed on these poor firemen enough on a Saturday afternoon

Me, being sunblind and looking dorky in front of the open bay doors. We were lucky enough to not only be allowed inside to look around, but they actually had to open the doors while we were there to move a vehicle in and pull the truck out so we managed to grab this shot.

And that concludes my personal Nerd Mecca  For those of you who haven’t gotten a chance to visit the firehouse yet, if you ever find yourself down in southern Manhattan, go check it out! It’s really neat to see in person, and you can lots of photos of yourself standing on hallowed ground XD

I read on someone’s post of a visit to the firehouse they won’t let you use the pole for insurance reasons. I’m very jealous of everyones that’s gotten to see it. It seems strange to think that the locals must be non-chalant about seeing it everyday compared to all of us here. Last time I went to NY I got to see the library and apartment but couldn’t get to the firehouse. Definitely next time.

It’s probably a place I’d always set aside time to visit whenever I’m in New York. You buy a Hook & Ladder 8 shirt, TD?

They should preserve Hook and Ladder 8 for all posterity…

That’s great.

In another nerd nirvana universe, I stopped off at Vasquez Rocks earlier this year. And it was an accident!

Down in Tucson at the University of Arizona is where they filmed Revenge of the Nerds including all the campus footage and the dorm house. Seeing those was my nerd trip last year. Here in Phoenix is the mall, water park and Circle K where strange things were afoot in Bill and Ted Excellent Adventure. I may shoot for the LA firehouse next year since it’s about 5 hours from here.

If anyone’s a Pippi Longstocking fan, in my town we’ve got the house that they used in The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking (1979).

Try contacting Daniel Taylor of “CHAC” should you still wish to visit LA23. If you do manage to go I’d be interested in getting some photos and or/floorplan sketches.

Thanks. I’ll let you know. I may do it as a weekend trip. I’ll even take a brick from it and put it on ebay with a picture to prove it’s authenticity.

Went to the New York Public Library three weeks ago but I have no idea where the firehouse is actually located.

is not a very knowledgable fan regarding locations of certain GB landmarks in the city

That’s great. I visited a few years back and they were super cool. I was thinking the same stuff – should I bother them? Do I want to get in their way? But they were all too happy to talk about it and they are apparently used to fans coming by. They’re proud of it. Just knock on the side door and say you’re a fan on a pilgrimage – it worked for me!

I visited a few months after 9/11, so the plaque wasn’t there. Just the devastation. The building was being worked on, so the scaffolding got in the way of the photo…

Take the 1 Train downtown from Times Square station (Or Canal Street Station) and disembark at Franklin Street Subway station, then walk one block north and you should see it, it’s on the south-east corner of crossing of Varrick and N.Moore Streets.

It has been, it is now a historical landmark…or atleast that’s what my ex told me when we went there last month

I did not, sadly. They didn’t have my size… they were all too big :frowning:

I should go back to the library… I haven’t been in years. As for where the firehouse is, here is where I found it:

I see it every time I drive out of the Holland Tunnel.

I’m jealous, I live in Montana. I’m only a forty hour drive from new york. I would like to some day go there to see the firehouse. Great pics by the way!

I feel like a total dunce. All the times I’ve gone to NYC, which is an hour away by train, I’ve never been to the firehouse. I’ve been to the library, Central Park West and the Statue of Liberty. And sadly to say I’ve never even been to Ground Zero!! :sigh:  :sigh:

Why thank you! If you ever make it out to NY you should check it out!

Great pics over there Terrordoggy… That´s a place I have to visit whenever I´m in New York (another one is the Dakota Building).
