Hi all!
Finally got my flight suit!
Already have my pearl grey dye!
Now, should I remove the velcro nametag peice and belt straps before I dye it? Does it really matter?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, it will make a difference. The dye will not take to the fabric as well under the velcro. It is a very subtle difference but it is there.
My suggestion is to remove all the velcro on the suit prior to dyeing, especially if it is to be left off the suit. You do not need to worry about removing the belt or any of the coarse velcro, just the fuzzier stuff because it will soak up dye VERY quickly and for some reason color remover will not take it out.
A lot of people dye their suits with the velcro still attached, which is fine if you plan to use it on the finished product. If it is velcro to be removed you might as well do it now.
Oh, that helps a lot, thanks!
I probably will leave the velcro on because I plan on using it to attatch the name tag. Besides that, I guess I can leave the belt velcro and wrist velco in place!
So, basically, I can dye any velcro that will remain in place except the fuzzy stuff!
Thank you!
I just left mine all on except the nametag one. I left the wrist and belt ones on. Its hardly noticable once the suit and belt are all decked out.
Great! Thank you!
Just curious, but did you re-attatch the nametag velcro and use it to attatch the ghostbusters name tag?
Thanks!
I used hot glue to put my patches on, but, then again, i use hot glue for everything. : )
You can even dye the fuzzy stuff if you want to (dye will not harm it) but since the suits were meant to be worn loose I left my belt straps just tight enough to fit to the suit. The rest of the velcro sticks out and for some reason takes on a purple tone when dyed with the pearl gray. If you watch the movie closely enough, you’ll notice the belt straps visible but the velcro blends into the suit. Nowhere in the screen grabs can I find evidence of purple velcro. It is true that the belt and the A.L.I.C.E pack strap can conceal the belt strap but again, in some screen shots the belt straps on the uniforms are exposed.
All we can do is make personal suggestions but ultimately it is up to you what you want to do. Hope this helps!
I don’t reccomend hotglueing the nametag or patch on. You can use the velcro for the nametag, however it will need to be shifted upward on the suit to be screen accurate. Your best bet is to just sew both on.
I sewed on the nametag, and Ironed on the Logo patch. AJ’s patch is the only patch I have ever Ironed on once, and never had to mess with it. Now I havent wore my suit for anything yet. But still, The nametag adhesive peeled right off. Good luck. Oh yeah, Ron is right about the name placement.
What Ron said.
I know some of the patches and nametags come with an iron-on backing, but I wouldn’t even go that route. Ironing is semi-permanent, and some patches chip or flake off over time, leaving you with an ugly mess.
Sewing really is the best way to go. It’s accurate, looks the best, it’s not hard, and takes all of 10 minutes.
