SHEVACON FORMALLY INVITES YOU TO SHEVACON 2011
Shevacon formally invites you to the Shevacon Convention in Roanoke, Virginia on March 3, 4, 5 and 6, 2011.
SheVaCon retained its name from its origins as the Shenandoah Valley Convention in Staunton, VA. They’ve since moved to Roanoke because of larger space requirements, and the 501st have since helped them outgrow their last location. This year, Shevacon is in a larger location. That means a larger hotel, more rooms, larger Board rooms, a theater room for the Masquerade, larger dealers room, and larger hallways for the fan groups. Shevacon is happy to announce their new location in the Sheraton Roanoke Hotel and Conference Center.
http://www.shevacon.org/location.php#HostHotel
Coming up in 2011 is SheVaCon XIX, so they’re a well-established convention.
http://www.shevacon.org/Index.php
SheVaCon is a Science Fiction & Fantasy, Horror, Costuming and Gaming Convention. SheVaCon is a Not For Profit organization so all the work you see by the time you arrive at the convention has been done by the volunteering efforts of the Board of Directors and everyone they have been able to talk into donating their time, money or supplies.
WHY IS SHEVACON HERE? For most, SheVaCon is here as a small inexpensive vacation from the real world for 3 fun filled days. Getting together with friends and family to enjoy the genre they love. For others SheVaCon is a educational outlet for the aspiring Artists or Writers. Here we give the Artists and Writers a chance to talk to each other offering workshops and panels on “How to Get Published” or “Tools the Professionals Use”. Amateurs can take advantage of a chance to talk to the Pro’s, get their feed back and learn some new tricks of the trade. SheVaCon has 2 Scholarships 1 in art and 1 in writing that are awarded each year to qualified applicants. For entering into the Scholarship please view: http://www.shevacon.org/Scholarships.php#Info_Scholar

Fan Group Costume Contest Category for the above mentioned Costume Contest.
With the addition of so many Fan Groups from different genres of the science fiction and fantasy realms to the convention, Shevacon has added a new section to the Costume Contest to highlight their specific skills in the trade. The Fan Group costumes will be judged in most of the same categories as the non-Fan Groups, although held to a higher standard.
• Best In Show - The ‘Standout’ of all of the Fan Group Costumes
• Best Craftsmanship - This will be a tough one to judge - but we’ll be looking at the costume’s every detail.
• Best Presentation - Judged on stage of course.
• Best Recreation - Oh we’ll be able to tell… it might be difficult given the level of skill and detail - but I’m sure we’ll manage.
• Best Skit - Get up there and do your best to entertain us!
• Best Group - 2 or more contestants… let us see what ya got!
• Viewers Choice - voted on by applause from the audience- so strut your stuff!
And yes, there will be awards!
Reintroducing the Best Costume Event of all, The Hall Costume Competition! That’s right, just wearing a costume at the con can get you a nifty “Hey that’s an awesome costume you got there,” nod from our roving secret judges.
This competition runs from the start of SheVaCon on Friday, and goes until 6pm on Saturday of the convention. So throw on your favorite costume, walk around, have a good time, and you just might get a pleasant surprise.
Hall costumes are any costume worn during the con that are not specifically entered into the Masquerade contest. These costumes are judged by roving secret judges and are awarded on the spot by those judges. These awards are a nod to all of the hard work that goes into a costume that is just being worn for fun by a fan. Recipients of the Hall Costume awards are asked to display their costumes during the Masquerade for all to see.
There will be a ‘Best Hall Costume’ Award that is awarded at the Masquerade. Hall costumes are not subject to the close scrutiny of those entered in the Masquerade, as this is a ‘just for fun’ segment. Best Hall Costume award is by popular vote. Hall costumes are not required to produce any documentation or reference material at all for their pieces.
Saturday night SheVaCon is proud to present The SheVa Con Throwdown Dance Party . Your badge gets you in. The beats get you down. Because no matter whether you spent your day at panels, looking at animated girls in short skirts, guys in traditional kilts, gaming, LARPing, drinking, shopping, costuming, drumming or simply experiencing life outside of a darkened basement, it’s time to celebrate. To clear up any confusion from previous years: The hotel staff requires all guests to remain fully clothed at all times.
All weapons and/or large props are not allowed in the dance…please make arrangements to leave in your room / car ..etc…. Costumes and stationary glow sticks encouraged. Event is 17+. Proof of age must be given if requested at the door.
No alcoholic beverages are allowed inside the event. At any time Shevacon staff or hotel staff have the option of ejecting any one who is in violation of the rules of the dance. We are Saturday night life.
Also a personal favorite game of Spat’s is Kill Dr Lucky. A very interesting and fun live action role playing game that plays like a live action Clue except the players work towards killing Dr Lucky instead of solving who killed him.
On Sunday be sure to check out the art sale and auction.
SHEVACON GUESTS
The MEDIA GUEST OF HONOR is Virginia Hey
Born in Sydney, Australia, Virginia Hey spent her childhood in both Australia and London, England. She was discovered at a bus stop and began a career as a fashion model in Australia and Europe. She appeared on the cover of several magazines and soon moved into acting where she starred in television and films in Australia and the UK. Hey got her first big break in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) as the Warrior Woman. She was also one of the Bond girls in The Living Daylights (1987), and most recently played the multi award-nominated blue priestess Zhaan in “Farscape” (1999) (1999-2004). She left the show after three years because she wanted to grow her hair and eyebrows again (she was required to shave both for the role), and also for health reasons as the blue make-up took a toll on her well-being and caused her kidneys to bleed and set off a chain of health issues.
Hey is a certified practitioner of natural therapies. She studied Naturopathy, Homeopathy and Herbal Medicine for one year in 1992, became certified in advanced Reiki in 1998 and Meditative healing for 2 years 1998-1999 before Farscape began in late 1999. She is interested in New Age spiritualism and teaches meditation across the USA.
The WRITER GUEST OF HONOR is ** Peter Beagle **
Born in Manhattan on April 20, 1939, Peter Soyer Beagle, son of Simon and Rebecca Soyer Beagle, was raised in the Bronx, New York. From an early age he was a voracious reader, and his parents encouraged him in his pursuits of the literary arts. As early as sixth grade, he proclaimed that he was going to be a writer, and during his years at the Bronx High School of Science (Class of '55), he was a frequent contributor to the school literary magazine. It was in this period that his work caught the attention of the fiction editor at Seventeen Magazine. In his senior year of high school, he entered a poem and a story into the 1955 Scholastic Writing Awards Contest, without realizing that one of the top prizes was a college scholarship. His poem took first place, and he spent the next four years at the University of Pittsburgh.
In his sophmore year at U Pitt, one of his short stories, Telephone Call, won first place in a Seventeen Magazine short story contest. In short order, he acquired an agent, cranked out several more pieces (including “A Fine and Private Place” when he was only 19), and graduated with a degree in creative writing, a minor in Spanish, and a passion for writing.
He then spent a year overseas, returning home when he found himself enrolled by his very capable agent in a writing workshop at Stanford University, where, besides honing his writing skills, he met Enid, who would later become his first wife.
After his time at Stanford had ended, he kicked around the East Coast for a while, before deciding that his heart belonged with Enid in California, and so he and a friend undertook a cross-country motorscooter trip, which would later become the basis of I See By My Outfit. Once he had married Enid and moved in with her and her three children, he supported himself and his family as a freelance writer for years, even after the well-received publication of “The Last Unicorn”.
In the 1970’s, Beagle increasingly produced screenplays, (he continues to write for the screen to this day) while also pursuing his avocation as a folk singer, delighting audiences with songs in English, Yiddish, French and German. A live album of his songs has been released, and he once played at The Palms in Davis, CA. According to him, “singing (and dishwashing) are the only other things I’ve done for money.” Between 1973 and 1985 he performed every weekend at the club L’Oustalou in Santa Cruz, California. In 1980, his marriage to Enid ended, and in in the summer of 1985 he moved to Seattle, Washington for several years.
At some point, he evidently decided he had had enough rain, and moved back to California. (I know he lived in Santa Cruz at some point, but can’t find the exact time frame.) He now resides in Davis with his wife of ten years, the Indian writer and artist Padma Hejmadi. As he says, “I’m in the phone book.” I checked - he is. Beagle is active in the Davis community, and is a member of the “Friends of Davis” group, which recently protested the opening of a Borders Bookstore, which would put many local Davis bookstores out of business, instead of another business such as a clothing store, which the Davis community desperately needed. The Friends of Davis ended up taking the city to court to block the project - all information I can find now is that the court action is “ongoing”.
I am informed that Beagle “is a regular on the university circuit where he gives readings, lectures, and concerts,” and I know that he appears at the occasional fantasy convention. (Check out the appearances page for current information.) He has conducted writing workshops at such institutions as The University of Washington and Clarion West.
His works have been translated into at least 15 languages to date, and he continues to write wonderful, magical books, thank heavens.
The ARTIST GUEST OF HONOR is ** Matt Busch **
Regarded as one of the top entertainment illustrators, Matt Busch has made a career out of tapping into every expressive art imaginable, surprising even his die-hard fans what he does next.
In the early 90’s, Busch began his career in Hollywood, working in every aspect of the movie business, from concept design work on THE MATRIX, to storyboards for CON-AIR, to poster design for THE DEVIL’S OWN. Simultaneously, he began illustrating books, magazines, posters, comics, trading cards and toys for notable pop culture properties, including LORD OF THE RINGS, INDIANA JONES, THE CROW, HEROES, G.I. JOE, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, The HULK, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, RESERVOIR DOGS, BRUCE LEE, WITCHBLADE, ROBOCOP, The MUMMY, STARGATE SG-1, and STAR TREK.
http://mattbusch.com/headline.htm
Mostly known for his work with the STAR WARS universe, Busch has written and illustrated dozens of STAR WARS books and magazines. He created the cover of TALES FROM THE EMPIRE, which became a New York Times Bestseller. Busch has also been involved with creating artwork for advertising, marketing, and licensed products for all three STAR WARS prequels. Due to last year’s 30th Anniversary of the saga, Busch produced 7 different STAR WARS posters that year alone!
Busch also provided nearly 400 drawings and paintings for the critically acclaimed YOU CAN DRAW STAR WARS book from DK Publishing. Busch has also extended his own unique drawing and painting tutorials to video, with episodes at StarWars.com. Later, these episodes topped the charts on MySpace.com, with several videos going straight to Number One. Further, the first two exciting (and hilarious) seasons of episodes have been collected on to limited edition DVDs!
A closet musician himself, Busch has also enjoyed producing art for major musical artists like ALICE COOPER, BEASTIE BOYS, BECK, BLACK SABBATH, CINDERELLA, FOO FIGHTERS, GARBAGE, KID ROCK, L.L. COOL J, BILLY JOEL, MEGADETH, MOTLEY CRUE, TED NUGENT, OZZY OSBOURNE, POISON, and JESSICA SIMPSON.
The first hardcover collection of his work, “FANTASTIC VISIONS: The Art of Matt Busch” was Published by Avatar Press, which included an Introduction by POISON’s Rikki Rockett. SQP Publishing later released a follow-up hardcover collection titled “PUCKER: The Seductive Art of Matt Busch” which featured an Introduction by SYSTEM OF A DOWN’s John Dolmayan. Last year Hermes Press published the quintessential collection, titled “THE WORLDS OF MATT BUSCH.”
In 2006, Busch released his first independent movie, CONJURE, a film he wrote, directed, starred in, and even composed music for. Financing the entire movie himself, the unique film was met with critical acclaim and shattered records- becoming “The Highest PreSelling Movie of All Time” according to HorrorMovies.com.
For over a decade, Busch has also found success as a writer, having written numerous books and magazine articles on art techniques. Busch has also written and illustrated creator-owned comic books, including ALIZARIN’S JOURNAL and DARIA JONTAK, and a highly regarded graphic novel, CRISIS. One of Busch’s biggest endeavors, a screenplay titled THE TAURUS FACTOR is currently in development with Producer Don Murphy (TRANSFORMERS, SHOOT 'EM UP).
Busch now resides in a multiple-facility home set up in Macomb Township, Michigan, complete with an art studio, digital editing suite, recording studio, product warehouse, and even a mini movie theater. Here, Busch continues to work on many ‘Hollywood’ projects via Internet and Fed Ex. However, Busch also spends a great deal of time on the road, and his most recent documentary collecting his travel adventures from around the world, ILLUSTRATION NATION, has just been released on DVD.
For more information, check out the official web site, MattBusch.com.
The MASTER OF CEREMONIES is SPAT.
Spat and his company, SpatCave Studios, have been supplying the NY Indie Film scene with high quality costumes, props and FX make-up for their films for almost 8 years now.
In addition to his film work, both in front of and behind the camera, he has become a staple of Convention Fandom with his very popular website, (http://www.spatcave.com) and his series of “Spat Gone Wild” DVDs which document his adventures at various conventions around the country.
In what little spare time he has, Spat also makes costumes and props for sale to fans.
He and his work have appeared in many magazines, on many TV shows and films, and, most recently in Hardrock, Jedi House and The Creek.
He and his work will soon be appearing in the upcoming films: Last Day Of Summer, Cross the Line, Bullets Over Brownsville, and Trenches (a new Sci-Fi series for Disney).
Currently, Spat and his team of miscreants are producing a series of Sci-Fi Spoofs called, “The Adventures of Captain Bucky and His Space Marshals in Outer Space”.

The SPECIAL GUEST is Jim O’Rear
Jim O’Rear has been involved in the entertainment industry for over twenty five years, beginning his career on tour as The Youngest Professional Magician with David Copperfield, Harry Blackstone Jr., and The Great Tomsoni and opening for acts like Cheap Trick and John Anderson.
With his “magical” background and having been trained in New York at The American Academy Of Dramatic Arts, it was only natural that Jim move into the realm of film, television, and theatre where he has worked steadily as an actor, stuntman, and special make-up effects artist on such projects as Day Of The Dead, Star Trek 4, The Vampire Wars, Lethal Weapon 3, Creature Feature, Hayride Slaughter, Cop & ½, Psycho Beach Party, Evita, Little Shop Of Horrors, No Retreat No Surrender 3, Mortal Kombat: Conquest, and many more with actors including Martin Sheen, Burt Reynolds, Mel Gibson, Amanda Plummer, Maximillian Schell, Robert Englund, Jon Voight, Chris Sarandon, and others.
http://www.jimorear.com/home.html
Wanting to get some of his own ideas onto the screen, Jim successfully moved into the area of screenwriting. Although competition is tough, he has written and sold a number of horror-related screenplays, including The House Of Pain (in development with Robert “Freddy” Englund, Gunnar “Leatherface” Hansen, Tom “Friday The 13th” Savini, Bill “ChopTop” Moseley, and Debbie “Scream Queen” Rochon), Hayride Slaughter, Hayride Slaughter 2, The Deadly Obligation, Vampyre Tales, Wolfsbayne, The Deepening, and (currently playing on cable) Scream Farm. Jim also placed third for Best Screenplay in TSA’s screenwriting competition and was a finalist in the Fade In Screenplay contest and Writer’s Network competition.
Jim’s horror writing has not stopped there. He has also contributed many articles to national publications, such as Scary Monsters Magazine, Scars Magazine, Haunted Attraction Magazine, Comics Interview, and Underground Entertainment, and has been recognized in Fangoria Magazine, Alternative Cinema, Fright Times, and Femme Fatale Magazine. Jim was also “immortalized” as a comic book character opposite Thor in an issue of MARVEL Comic’s “What The…?” and has appeared as himself (along with Ken Foree, Tom Savini, Debbie Rochon, Brinke Stevens, James Gunn, and more) in the fictional horror novel, BAD MOON RISING… the third installment of Jonathan Mayberry’s GHOST ROAD BLUES trilogy…. and in ZOMBIE: CSU. In addition, Jim has written a paranormal book about real hauntings in Tennessee for Schiffer Publishing titled TENNESSEE GHOSTS, available in stores now.
Currently, Jim continues to work as an actor and stuntman on several films per year, recently cast opposite Andrew “Wishmaster” Divoff (Lost, Airforce One), Tom Savini (Grindhouse, From Dusk Til Dawn), and Jason Carter (Babylon 5, Angel) in The Dead Matter and playing Kane Hodder’s (Hatchet, Friday The 13th) brother in Old Habits Die Hard.
