Legendary voice actor Peter Cullen has passed away. He guest-starred on The Real Ghostbusters as Doctor Destructo and was best known for voicing Optimus Prime in Transformers and Eeyore for Disney.

I just heard about this on Thursday. While I never had the opportunity to meet Peter Cullen in person, I am pleased that I have his autograph in my collection. As with Lorenzo Music, Frank Welker, Maurice Lamarche and many others he literally was a voice of my childhood and beyond. From his work on G.I. Joe and The Transformers, to Winnie The Pooh, to guest starring on The Real Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I also fondly recall him narrating many movie trailers and promotional spots for cable tv channels like Cartoon Network. It is kind of eerie timing. Hasbro’s been doing an “Apology Tour” for the animated movie’s 40th anniversary, specifically apologizing for killing off Optimus. The tag line is “Forty Years Later, It Still Hits Like A Truck”
They’re going to have a limited theatrical rerelease in September; it’s gonna hit with a whole new dimension now.

He had such a memorable and distinct voice. Truly one of the best voice actors, up there with Frank Welker, Maurice Lamarche and Lorenzo Music.
He no longer speaks yet we hear him everywhere.

There have been a number of celebrity deaths that have bummed me out lately. Screaming Mad George was one of them. Then it went Dolly, then Curry, but the hardest hitting one for me was easily Peter Cullen. I did have the chance to meet him, but I couldn’t afford his autograph at the time. However, I did get to watch my buddy get his Transformers movie poster signed by both him and Frank Welker. One of the few times they were together doing a meet and greet. Now, it’s something I really regret not having been able to have done at the time. I even have Dave Coulier’s and Maurice LaMarche’s autographs, so Welker and Cullen would’ve been a no-brainer. His voice is one that simply cannot be replaced. Rest in peace.
