Pinewood derby Ecto-1

I found out today about a pinewood derby for the older guys in my church, being held just for fun. There seem to be no particular rules regarding it, so I decided to make an Ecto-1. I’ll carve the car itself out of wood and make the roof rack out of legos. Whaddaya think?

cant wait to see it. man, i remember doing those as a kid, they were fun

After rooting around my lego collection, here’s what I have for the roof rack:

Cool man. I remember wanting to make a pinewood derby Ecto-1 SOOOO badly when I was in cub scouts, but for some reason or other the design was against “regulations”. Ah well, it probably wouldn’t have been very aerodynamic anyway, which is something to consider. I did however make a batmobile-esque car that did fairly well as I recall…

I was lucky. My Boy Scout troop never had any strict regulations.

We also had separate categories for design, speed, etc. I always went for design and won it every year. Came in dead last on speed, but I was more than happy with that trade off.

The Eco-1 sounds like an awesome idea! Amazingly, I don’t think I ever thought to build one back in the day…

What.. a huge satalite dish on the roof wouldn’t be aerodynamic?

Can’t wait to see the car!

i actually made one when I was in scouts back in the day. The bad part was that each time it went down the track the parts on the roof kept falling off. I think it was disqualified after the 2nd try. But it think it won best design or whatever. ^_^. it in my dad’s workshop now with all of the other cars, but it just has a couple of see-thru tubing in paper tubes left, i think the other stuff broke apart when it fell on the track… :frowning:

I too made several Batmobile style cars as a scout. We didn’t have very many regulations to follow, it just couldn’t be too long or too heavy… or too light for that matter. My first care was just a blue wedge with “Snake” written in red letters on the top. It had a few snake stickers on it and “Bye-Bye” on the back. I got second place in the troop comp, and first in regional. My second car was a black wedge with a bat symbol on it. I got first in troop and first in regional. My last car was built a lot like the batmobile from the animated series. It had a piece of wood glued to the top for the canopy, fins cut into the back side, flames painted where the jet would be, and it was painted dark blue. I got second in troop and something like 17th in regional… Apperently the kids in my troop just sucked at pinewood derby…

damn, I wish I still had my pinewood derby car…

I made it to look like the Ecto-500 toy… sans the ghostgrabbers.

I think I got 3rd in my troop.

Sure beats the crap outta mine. All I did was take the block, put little dents in it, painted it yellow, put a Spongebob keychain as the driver, and called it “The Poriferan”. I was dead last in all races, but I won most original.
