Hi, i’m needing to do a scratch built PKE meter (unless anyone has any parts for sale either original iona or a casting) and whilst the plans on this site offer great visual help i cannot seem to locate any reference of dimensions. Is there anybody out there who is willing to help? I have tried the “Search” function but that didn’t help. I would prefer all relevant sizes in mm or cm, as inches are a bit foreign to me being from the UK. I hope to make a mould and vacuum form the main body using HIPS. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Ooh, that’s a good question. I have never actually seen measurements offered. I know a few members have Iona’s and you may be able to ask them to measure them. PMed you.
No-one???
Hey, I guess at this point you may want to just eye ball it using reference information. Its not impossible to come close as long as their is a point of reference in the photo for you to judge size. Sorry man,
Joe
If I find the time I will take a bunch of measurements, but sadly it’s not a priority of mine right now…
If I find myself with some time I will start working on some blueprints with measurements…
I’ll have a Iona copy soon, as I’m doing the same thing and have an original Iona. I’ll probably do a run of them. Just need to pick up the liquid rubber, clay, and plastic
Sure, I assume this is for next Halloween? Otherwise you’re a little screwed ![]()
Er… really? Being a brit myself (and I only moved to the US in 2006!) that surprises me… I mean metric is easier, but there’s a reason that Inches are called Imperial Measurments. ![]()
Anyhow, mm and cm are more exact.. so if I did this I’d give them out in that anyhow… my goal is to come up with a pretty definitive set of blueprints. ![]()
Hello abritinthebay, i’m not needing it for halloween as such but i do need to make one asap for a fan film i’m making.
The reason i say inches are a bit foreign is due to the fact i’m a technology teacher and have to drum mms into the kids heads now days so never actually use them. The Other reason i’d prefer them is that they are in multiples of 10 and easier to divide up etc (for me they are anyway, any imperialists may disagree with me).
I took the plans off this site today and pasted the image into word and played with the size printing loads of them until it felt about right. I guessed the the handle length was 9cm and the body was 11cm. I can live with that for the moment but if anybody can get me an actual measurement for these parts then let me know and i’ll work out the rest.
I don’t know why i left it this late to make this prop, i’ve built 4 proton packs, a trap, goggles, 8 uniforms and what’s the first prop we see in the run of filming? You guessed it, the PKE meter.
Thanks for the interest in helping me and i may be interested in a nice casting when you get them done.
Overall length of the Iona is 271mm give or take, the handle and body have no defined breaking point to measure individually…
The body is 67mm wide at the widest point…
Huh? A measurement is as exact as you measure it regardless of the system…
Example if you measure down to 64ths of an inch it’s more accurate then whole mm measurements… It all depends on how accurate you measure not what system you use…
Yeah… I kind of put that badly didn’t I? I guess I was trying to say the same thing as JT94 - Metric is more easily dividable and such. Plus most inch measurements tend to stop at 1/16th of an inch - which is 1.6mm. Given that using household tools its hard to get more accurate than around 0.5-1mm I would say that mm is more practical…
Anyhow… cough nothing to see here, move along.
That was really nice of you to do Exoray! Thanks a lot!
Ok guys, i’m nearly there, thanks to exoray giving me an overall length and using one of the rough plans on this site i decided to make a scratch built PKE shell. I used MDF to make a basic shape and then sanded the hell out of it on a belt sander (i’ve never been so dusty in my life!)
My first vacuum forming came out ■■■■. Too fat for my liking so i chiselled off the screen and front mould and took it back to the sander. The 2nd moulding came out much better and i’ve now done my wings. I’ve again used lego (like my trap) to make a gearing system that enables the wings to move up or down together.
Some flashing LEDs have now been added and include red as well as yellow leds as i thought i might as well make the whole thing unique. Once i’ve finished the electronics and glued the two halves together i’ll post up the pictures. It looks too big to me but i’m beyond caring now. Like all my props i’ve cut corners because i’m too impatient.
Here’s the pics i promised…
and a link to the other props section with more pics
Wow, Great Job!
Good job! I actually need to get on and build mine (which means casting my Iona too…).
About it feeling./looking big - the Iona is actually surprisingly large, and it looks about right, or at least the proportions are right in your photos. So it might just be that it looks big, not that it IS big…
Wow, that looks really good ![]()
