My father works in the plastic business and knows people who do a lot of cast resin and one time injection molding projects. I was talking to him about the proton pack and showing him cast pieces online. He then told me he could get a guy to use Norm’s plans to make a one time proton pack piece mold for only $100.00.
Now my question is, is this a good idea? I mean, plastic is light, but light enough to be carried around on the pack in large pieces and be used for the gun as well? The reason I ask is because I am not sure whether or not to do it with plastic, or go with MDF (even though the only way I could cut it would be at school). What would you guys recommend?
I meant to say that one, I couldn’t remember who made what. I am hoping the millimeters won’t throw him off, as I would need to convert them myself and I don’t really wanna go through that process. Some time soon (this week), I will be getting a call about the molds and what not. I’m very excited to have all this happening at once.
I think that is a pretty incorrect estimate. Did he mean $100,000?
I know a bit about injector molding, and $100 for anything requireing a mold is pretty unfathomable. Sure the pieces cost pennies to make, but the mold is extremely expensive.
To be honest, I have no clue what he does. I just know he does one mold, really cheap. Mine will be in pieces that I put together, so piece by piece will be how it goes. He probably does wooden molds or something, I am not sure at all how he does it. When I get the info, I’ll ask and post it.
Yeah I thought steel molds were used for that, like how they make action figures and stuff. Maybe he meant $100 per piece with the thought of selling a ton of them to cover the production costs?
Heck it’s worth a try though, if you end up offering plastic shells for $100 I’d definitely buy one.
I would love to make a deal with this guy and sell them for you guys. If all goes well on this, I might have to talk to him about it. Would love to help all the new Ghostbusters out!
yeah, AJ is right. Injection molding is expensive to start, but if you do runs of 100,000 pieces, it gets cheap for the toy companies and it’s done in China so it’s cheaper. Even blow molding (which is less accurate than injection molding) is fairly expensive. But if the mold for the proton pack is $100 that’s pretty affordable. Your Dad does it so he probably knows what he is talking about.
Yeah, as of now it’s uncertainty because the guys company is in fear of getting bought out, but he is trying not to sell. It sucks because we were just about to finalize it all and make it happen. If all goes well, news will be posted. Sorry for all this wait and see stuff, but it’s a bit slow when you have a lot of other things going on.
