I’m using flat black Plasti-Kote industrial all purpose enamel for my pack. The finish is great exept for a few spots that refuse to dry. They stay glossy and tacky, days after spraying. Has this happened to you before…? Hm, first time?
this has happened to me a bunch of times my hardware shop didn’t have acrylic washers for my cyclotron shock mount…so neoprene it was. I painted it silver, and i thought it would NEVER dry…eventually it did, though. some other parts that refused to dry just got coated with spackle (some use bondo) sanded…and then the paint holds a lot better.
You might have something on the surface you’re trying to paint – a bit of glue, some oil. I always thought it was good practice to wipe the surface down first with tack rag and then with some mineral spirits to make sure you remove contaminants.
To me it sounds like either contaminates such as glues, oils (as suggested below), or that whatever was painted should not have been painted with that type of paint because of the material it was made with. Wiping it down with something is always a good idea cause with contaminates, even just the oil from your hands from handling it can cause problems with some paint.
Did you primer the pack before you spray painted it?
Speaking of plasti-kote, where can you buy it? Sean suggests Pep Boys in his fiberglass tutorial, but the Pep Boys I went to didn’t carry it. They hadn’t even heard of it. Does anyone know of any other stores that carry plasti-kote primers and paints?
I think i saw plasti-kote at walmart the other week when i was over there looking at paints but i could be wrong…
You should be able to get it at some hobby shops. If not, try Home Depot or Lowes.
Home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot don’t carry paints like that. I’ve checked, and neither seems to carry sandable primers of any brand, and I’ve never seen any plati-kote regular spray paints there either. I’ve been to one local hobby store, and the only paints they had were model paints in small bottles or larger bottles of air-brush paints. I’m pretty sure the local Wal-Mart doesn’t have it either, and I’ve already tried the other auto stores (Checker, Auto Zone).
I guess I could try the local Hobby Lobby.

The “where to purchase” thing didn’t work for me. A window popped up and instantly vanished. It wasn’t the pop-up blocker because I turned that off. I think it must have been a java problem.
Is it really worth it for me to go to the trouble of tracking down some plasti-kote? I’ve used Dupli Color sandable primer; is plasti-kote any better than Dupli Color?
I just used rustolieum don’t bother with it paint is paint.
Unless you use two different kinds and they react and look like spider webs. DON’T mix primer and paint manufactures.

Whatever brand of paint you use, keep it all the same.
I only use Krylon.
