Proton Pack Questions

So I was invited to a Halloween Party this year and started exploring options and a Ghostbuster Costume came to mind. As any self respecting ghostbuster knows the proton pack makes the costume so I want to see what I am looking at price wise before I commit.

My main question is “Is there any place that offers Proton Pack Kits that are on the cheap side?” I am thinking like 50 to 125 bucks for just the parts and I do all the work to put it together. Most of the packs I have seen on Ebay and from Various links are way out of my price range.

The uniform should be easy enough to put together which is not what I am concerend about. Its the proton pack that will make the costume. I saw Radars pack (Awesome Job BTW) and I must say I might be following his route but I was curious if there was a kit that I could get that is priced in the ballpark of 125?

Thanks

Not likely, you will definately have to go the “scratch built” route to get one for that budget. It can still look good enough for Halloween, just go buy some foam board ,download the plans from this site and dive in, Halloweens clicking at your heels

Thanks for the quick repsonse

I guess from scratch it will be

Since I am a first time prop builder and hunter and gatherer I guess I will record my adventure and post up my results.

My goal is to put together a half way decent Ghostbuster costume for under 200 bucks so this will be fun indeed  Expect to see me a lot in the next 2 months with stupid questions

Hey no question is stupid unless it’s been answered 10000000000000 times before (just do a search)…if that fails. ask away  Good Luck! Scratch building is fun…just please make sure you measure things right (or go by REALLY good pictures too)

We’ve got a ton of stuff to make your suit / pack look good. You can probably get all you need for the pack and suit for under $100 (just add a flightsuit, and some foamcore / wood pack)

Just searching on the web today and investigating I am thinking this wont be as expensive and rough as I thought.

So far I am going to go with a mostly wood pack but as I encounter problems with wood I will look to use lighter materials to reduce the weight. Looking at all your packs and movie pics I am pretty sure I will have a half way decent looking pack when I get done.

I did have a question and I think someone would have done this already. With Wood Grain showing on the pack you all said use bondo to smooth the surface and then paint.

Has anyone ever used Plasti-Dip vs Bondo to coat the pack?

I know Plasti-Dip has released Plasti Dip in a spray can but I have always used brushes to apply this and was planning on using this to smooth the pack out plus its good protection.

I think im one of the only people that used wood vinyl spackle

Not me, I recommend several coats of brushed on shellac with sanding between coats to erase grain… You will literally get a candy finish, and it’s relatively nontoxic unlike bondo…

Shellac is FDA approved for human consumption and the shellac is simply dissolved in ethanol (grain alcohol) the same alcohol you drink…

Well it has begun. I created a Myspace to go into detail for a walkthrough and when I am done, if it comes out decent I will post what I did here

So far its all been research and planning but I did finish the motherboard this weekend
