Proton Pack Suggestions

I’d be interested to know how many of you have built your own packs from 3D or extruded shells as opposed to mod-ing a Spirit Halloween pack or picking up a Haslab pack? I’m not sure what my next step is going to be now that my Spirit pack was cancelled.

HELP!

I’ve 3D printed 2 packs at this point and im eagerly looking forward to my next project (more than likely a slime blower)

I would highly recommend looking into this option. It may seem like pretty major undertaking, but the 3d printing facebook is such a welcoming and informative place, if you have any issues, i know you can find your answers there.

I built my pack using a benofkent shell a couple of years ago, build thread here - https://www.gbfans.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46835. I bloody HATE sanding and filling 3D printed parts, so personally I’d go for a kit over a 3D printed one. If you do go the 3D printed route then the guy above is bang on the money, the Q Pack is the definitive 3D printed pack. Accept no substitute.

I had originally planned on building a pack using a shell and ordered a Benofkent shell. It took so long (almost 2 years) for that shell to arrive that I got impatient and ordered a shell from another company, Proton Props. and that shell took forever to be made. Then a member on this forum introduced me to the qpack and helped me print the files. As tobycj said above, there is a lot of filling and sanding to do, but when it was all said and done, I was supper happy with it and it took far less time than the year + in just waiting for a shell to get shipped.

I have a small resin printer but it won’t handle this. Do you have a suggestion for how large the build area needs to be for a PLA printer to handle printing a pack? I don’t have any experience with PLA printing. Appreciate the info!

I printed my first one on a 250x250 build plate, so that should be fine. You’re just going to have to do some building and seam filling. Not the end of the world, but I know it can be an annoyance.

I did upgrade to a 300x300 for my second and that was a total gamechanger. Highly recommend that.

Fab! Thank you. I have used the liquid resin from my printer to paint on some PLA prints before, hit it with a UV light and then sand. It fills like a dream and makes sanding a whole lot easier!

Gratefully, I have a buddy who has an extra 350x350 printer he’s going to loan me! Nice friend!! What do you recommend for the wire? PLA or other?

Oh, a 350x350 is going to be perfect.

Personally, I went with PETG, for the strength, but because its higher melting point, it’ll take a bit of tinkering with your printer settings to get it printing with PETG instead of PLA. Again, nothing crazy, just a bit of testing to get right.

Depending on your budget if you have the money..and this may sound insane given you are a new to enter FDM 3D printing…go for the BambuLab X1 Carbon. It’s very expensive but my goodness, if you don’t wanna deal with the headache of 3D printing then it’s well worth it. Everything about it is ready to print from hardware to software. Lots of other printers say they are plug and play but from my experience of dealing with several printings over my short 2 years of 3D printing, this is only the one that lives up to it.

It’s been a headache during my first entry into 3D printing and I learned a lot just because I ran into a lot of issues. I’ve done my fair share of tinkering and I’m done with that and want something that just works and the X1C is exactly that. At first I thought there would be no way for me to spend that much on a printer but it’s been well worth it and I’m glad I made the investment

Appreciate all the comments. I now have an Anycubic Chiron sitting on the garage floor waiting for a place to be set up. I don’t have the space for this large printer inside so temperatures will be an issue…but it’s large enough to build almost anything I can imagine. It’s just going to be a sharp learning curve but can’t wait to start printing a new proton pack!!
