Question on steel shells.

I wanted to pose this question to you all here because I was curious. How much would you guys be willing to pay for steel or aluminum shells? Would you even WANT metal shells?

I don’t think anyone would want a steel shell… it would weigh a ton. An aluminum shell on the other hand, everyone would want… if the price were low enough.

And how much would you be willing to pay for an aluminum shell?

Treeee fiddy!

I think it would be incredably difficult to make an accurate shell out of any kind of metal. Also even if it were aluminum in order for it to be strong enough to mount other parts to it would have to be at least 1/16" thick and it would weigh a lot.

But again if the price was comperable to a fiberglass shell I would jump on that band wagon.

Ah, the new model of American business. Charge absolutely as much as possible. In all seriousness it would depend on how it was built, weight, etc. Most people on here are going for screen accuracy, and the real props were fiberglass so there may be a limited market.

Ok, that is the final edit. Here is my question-

Would you be interested in a shell that is made out of steel that would weigh in at about 13lbs? If it were screen accurate, of course. Aside from being made out of fiberglass, obviously. How much would you all pay for that?

The reason I am sticking with steel instead of aluminum is because of how much more costly aluminum is for materials and welding.

If you had a convenient lay-a-way plan!

I hate to state what I would pay because I always feel like I’m ripping someone off or being cheap when I do that. I usually just wait until they announce a price and if I think it’s reasonable I go for it.

Sorry not much help I know.

It may be helpful if you figure out what the materials would cost, how long it would take to form one, and apply what you feel is a fair hourly rate for your work to figure out what it will cost to produce one - that will be a much better barometer of cost/value than asking people of myriad incomes and tastes what they’d pay for one. You could gauge interest at a calculated realistic price.

Why are there two threads for this?

TBH, Im not sure. I edited the title and it created another one.

GreyFoxSolid, If you are asking if people would be interested on buying a Steel Shell that’s one thing. But there is no proof of concept. If you did indeed make steel shells you would have to pre-drill and tap every thing as drilling into metal is a bitch. You would have to make it so that people with other metal parts can just easily add there parts to your shell by screwing them in. As they do with the metal throwers. I think you are going about it the wrong way. You should build a steel shell proton pack, make a build thread step by step and get people excited for one. And if it turns out good and people want to invest in one then good for them and you. But what I am trying to say is Build one and test the waters and if it is a success get a supporting membership and sell em.

Sage advice.
