We had a local highschool ask if we could help them with a float for their highschool prom. The setup was that all the floats be an 80s theme and so one groups theme was Ghostbusters. Well we had assumed they wanted us to haul their float in our truck. When we contacted them saying we were thrilled to help them, they further explained that we actually had no part in it, they just wanted our vehicle, jump suits and equipment. Suffice to say we politely delcined.

I would have fine towing their float and actually helping make some jump suits, but just handing over our equipment and especially my Ecto Truck (my dads truck), nope. Wasn’t gonna happen.

A couple of friends and I were at a screening in full gear and an enthusiastic fan asked if he could wear one of our packs and get his picture taken. This guy had very visible issues with social interaction. I don’t think he looked any of us in the eye, he just kept belching and wiping spittle from his mouth. I pretended not to hear him, and one of the other guys said his pack wasn’t removable…then there was Steve, who had already taken his off.
Steve has to be one of the nicest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. At another screening that same month, he spent a good deal of time playing with a child who was developmentally disabled. That kid had a blast playing with Steve’s Matty trap, and it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. So, when this 40 year old guy who looked like he probably spent most of his time locked in a basement playing obscure RPG’s from the 80’s asked if he could wear his pack, Steve obliged. What followed made me more nervous than I ever have been for somebody else’s property.
Steve helped the guy get the pack on, which was no small feat considering the straps had to be re-adjusted quite a bit (Steve is on the thin side, and this guy was pretty heavy). Once it was on, Steve offered to take a picture with the guy’s cell phone. At this point, the guy reaches back and almost rips the thrower off the V-hook. His clumsy fondling of the wand made me wince. Steve took his picture and tried to hand the phone back over, but the guy demanded he take a few (hundred) more photos. Once he was satisfied, Steve handed him the phone and walked behind him to help him take off the pack. The guy muttered “thanks”, and slipped out of the straps like he was dumping his backpack after a long day at school. If it weren’t for Steve’s lightening fast reflexes, his pack would have been in pieces on the pavement. The guy mumbled, “my friends and Game Stop are never gonna believe this”, and walked off.
“Can we try on the pack? Can we borrow it for pictures?” The answer will and always will be “No.”
I did tell a persistent guy who believed the proton packs were real that if I let him try on the pack I am mandated by law to have him sign a release form. Of course he asked me why, so I told him that by signing the release form, my group and myself will not be held liable if he got impotent from the exposure to radioactive materials. He then changed his mind and walked away. I guess he didn’t see us laughing our ■■■■■ off at him when he walked away.
At the weekend, I attended a convention and was forced to borrow a pack from another member. Was not an enjoyable time because there was quite a few things not secure on the pack and I spend most of the weekend repairing these parts and worrying that the whole thing wasn’t going to fall apart.
Would never want the responsibility of borrowing a pack ever again, and would never consider lending my pack out when it’s finished.
I’ve been asked once or twice, and since my pack is a wildly-inaccurate cardboard POS that’s pretty easy to get on and off, I’ve generally obliged. Had I been wearing a REAL, much more accurate pack, I would’ve had to politely decline. I have enough trouble keeping MYSELF from doing harm to my possessions; no way I’d trust a stranger.
I’ve been asked numerous times by people if they can wear my pack and the answer has always been a no. There’s been 3 instances I can think of where someone else has worn it. Halloween 2010, I went to a zombie walk, then out to a club, not the wisest idea I know. In total I had my pack on for around 14 hours and my shoulders were screaming, the guy who was giving me my ride home was still partying. Another friend asked if I’d like the weight off my shoulders for a while whilst we were having a cigarette break outside the club. I was nervous and made sure that everything was strapped and secure but my god what a relief it was to have the pack off for 10 minutes.
Second time was at an event, a long time Ghostbusting friend of mine had issues with his pack the night before and subsequently hadn’t been able to bring it. My shoulders aching after a good few hours of wearing it I was happy to lend it him, knowing that he’d take care of it. No problems, no issues, was totally fine when I got it back a few hours later, GBs know how to look after the equipment as they know what work goes into making it
Third time, our group went to a showing of the original print of Ghostbusters. We went in full gear, the cinema introduced us to the crowd, had some photos. We then put our packs and traps into a secure office room at the cinema and went to enjoy the film. After the film, this very top heavy girl in one of the sexy/slutty gb costumes asks for a photo which we were more than happy to pose for for. “You have proton packs right?” “Yeah’’ " can I see them?” we ask the manager of the cinema and he’s fine with her coming with us into the office room with the packs. Before I can react she’s strode across the room and swung it onto her shoulder, just the one shoulder. I race over and am supporting the pack from the underside with my hands, I wasn’t happy. Nothing got damaged but it easily could have. All in all I feel I’ve been lucky lending my pack but I’d never lend it someone who didn’t have an idea of the work gone into it
I have only had my pack for a short time and had one of my best friends ask if he could borrow it some time, I said " I’m sure we can work something out" then I quickly changed the subject hopping he would forget seems to of worked out … so far lol
Make him sign a weaver saying that any part of the unlicensed nuclear accelerator damaged will be replaced with an appropriate high graded part. For example if the thrower is damaged and it’s all resin with pvc, you get an all aluminum thrower. Oh and his first born will be the next vessel for Vigo.
