Real Ghostbusters Soundtrack Cassette

There’s a Zia Records in Mesa, AZ that got their hands on a Real Ghostbusters cassette tape, but I’ve never seen one of these before. Does anyone know anything about this?

That my friend, is gold dust.

During season one of The Real Ghostbusters, music duo Tahiti contributed 10 commissioned songs for the show’s soundtrack, which was given a somewhat limited release on audio cassette… These soundtrack cassettes were planned to be sold in toy stores, but as it stands only a few of these tapes have been seen in the internet era.

More details can be found on Spook Central’s page: LINK, including a digital copy of the tracks from one of these tapes.

Thats a great find, thanks for sharing! :vinzclortho:

For the record, I didn’t buy it (they hadn’t put it out for sale yet when I was in there). But it’s there for anyone who wants it.

I’d love to add that tape to my collection, but dread how much the price tag would be given it’s rarity. :stuck_out_tongue:

Either way, it’s an incredible find.

The end credits of the real Ghostbusters claim this was also available on CD. But it seems that version never happened.

I do wonder if the scarcity of these cassettes is down to them not selling well back in 1986… Or, if they might be tied into the reason why Tahiti and commercial music weren’t featured in the show after season one. :whatever:

Now…if only we could find the original recording of the “John Smith” theme.

I would KILL for a clean copy of that.

Yes! I had this tape when I was little! We bought it in Toys’ R Us! I listened to it constantly on my red Little Tikes Tape player! A Classic!

An update thanks to Jeff Lewis of the Arizona Ghostbusters: he inquired about the cassette a couple of weeks ago, and at the time the staff at Zia were unsure what to price the soundtrack at, but were considering $1,000.

He’s now heard back from them, and they’ve settled on $500.

I as someone who also dabbles in retro video game collecting, prices for anything “retro” are becoming insane. I’m glad spook Central got the music off of one of these cassettes and posted it years ago.

I never had that, it was one of those things i diden’t know even existed until the internet era, but i had the cassette tapes of both Ghostbusters 1 and 2 as a kid. In fact, i remember the tape for ghostbusters 2 got warped and to this day i still expect to hear the distortions when i hear certain songs.

Heres a question though…does anyone have the old Ghostbusters and the Laser Ghosts storybook and cassette set? I remember that as a kid so vividly. This had to have been pre The Real Ghostbuters (which was 86 if i remember correctly) cause even as a kid i recall thinking this diden’t match up with the movie AT ALL…Even that laughably “Ghostbusters” theme on the tape replays in my mind every once in a while. Its almost like the people who made that book and cassette never saw the movie (they certainty didn’t have the rights to the Ray Parker Jr Song)

I wonder if thats as rare of a set too!
