Scratch Built RGB PKE Meter In Progress

Started working on this yesterday. I like it so far.

Nice work, are you planning on making the aerial for the meter lock into place in the “up” position? (So that it doesn’t slip down again) I don’t believe many other people have come up with a method for making it retractable, does the thin tube visible inside the body of the Meter fit into a hole of similar diameter?

Thankfully the way it was designed, it doesn’t need anything to keep it in the “up” position, there is enough surface area touching that it only slides down if you push it. As for the rig to make it slide, I came up with this design on the fly last night.

image

Blue: Main slide bar

Red: Slightly larger tube to slide along the main slide bar

Yellow: Platform where the antenna goes

Tealish (color blind so I think thats what color it is): side platforms to keep the main platform from shifting at all.

if I were to do another one I would do a double slide instead of a single slide due to the shifting side to side issue I had (but fixed with the side platforms.

Now what I would like to do is figure out a way to open the antenna without having to do it manually. Also does anyone know of a good link that explains in fully the waterfall light board with the beeps? Id like to rig on up for this.

One thing I did forget to mention is that the shell is two parts.

this picture was taken before the glare guard was glued in place.

Wow!

You could always make the arms spring-released, so that once the aerial is extended, the arms pop out at a roughly 45 degree angle.

Very interesting design you have come up with, but the first concern I’d have, unless I am misunderstanding things, is that with any kind of surface touching you are likely to experience a lot of paint rub in that area.

anything that rubs against anything else is inside the PKE meter so I don’t have to worry about that happening.

A couple good clear coats should help keep the paint intact as well.

A little more work, some sanding and such.

Tomorrow working on the knobs and push buttons.

oops, forgot I did this today also

Knob mock, not sure how I feel about these knobs. Ordering new ones tonight. image

Coming along nicely,

Moved the images to their own folder in photobucket. Here they are all in one post.

Nicely done! What kind of paint job do you plan on giving it? Show accurate blue? Some people paint them black. Somehow it looks more “real” that way. As real as a cartoon prop can look anyway. :-?

Not sure. I was thinking black like the video game one. But I haven’t really decided yet. Thoughts?

I’d go with black. But thats just me.

I deninitly say black. I’ve seen blue ones. I think it looks like something Eddy Valiant would pick up in Roger Rabbit. Too cartoony.

Black is is guys, as soon as I can figure out the wiring for the lights Ill move on to paint and stuff. Picked up some spot putty today to fill in some trouble areas.

This looks excellent, looking forward to seeing more!
