Shapeways Gigameter for 6" Line WIP

Ok, we’re really close on this one. In terms of size and design, this is just about exactly what I was trying to do. The only problem is that I screwed up at the design phase. It looked solid all the way though the design and submission stages, but here we are with a big gap on the front under the scanner dome. 3D rendering definitely presents a tough, weird and very frustrating set of challenges.

As out greater institutions like to put it, I’m working to correct the error. I’ll let you know when I get it straightened out.

I’ll be fixing this one with a dab of putty and painting it up. If anyone else doesn’t care about the rectangular hole, I can make it available to them now. Otherwise, a better one should be up on a few weeks.

Against my usual policy, I did do a little light sanding on this one before taking pictures, but it wasn’t that bad,

how much for the one in the photos? (+ shipping to NH)

It’s available now here

http://www.shapeways.com/model/622924/bassmeter.html

In Black/ White/ Transparent Detail it’s $9.12

I’ve just made everything available in Alumide too. I didn’t realize how much cheaper it is than the other metals. It’s only $5.79.

I haven’t tried it yet, but it should be fine for solid devices. I’m not sure how it will work for the traps since they need friction between the parts to stay together. It should work, but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ll order a trial set with my next batch.

I’m honestly not sure what the shipping will be for you. It’s always around $6.50 for me. That’s why I wait until I have a good bunch of items to order at a time.

If you’re willing to order it as is, I really have to thank you!

ill be picking one of these up for sure

looks great!

can you give us an idea of what is the difference between materials? sorry for asking so many questions but Im very interested in this project and if Im gonna spend alot I want to make sure they arent going to break even if I buy the least expensive material and I know nothing about this 3d printing stuff but i am intrigued

ditto

I don’t sweat the questions. I’m happy to introduce you guys to this stuff.

The least expensive materials on Shapways, actually aren’t the weakest. I haven’t tied them all, but the White Strong and Flexible is very cheap and is exactly what it claims to be- strong and flexible. It’s better for objects that are a little bigger than stuff like this though, since it has a very low detail level and looks a little fuzzy up close. The colored strong and flexibles are actually just dyed versions of the white, so I wouldn’t spend the extra money on them. The Black and White Detail materials are actually black and white solid through. They’re also nice and durable for action figure accessories. I got my PKE meter in it and the antenna hasn’t snapped off yet.

I haven’t tried them yet, but from what I’m told by others who have, Frosted Detail and Frosted Ultra Detail are the most fragile and they’re definitely some of the more expensive. I’m eager to try Alumide, which is a combination of White Strong and Flexable and aluminum power, that is supposed to have a higher detail level than the somewhat grainy WSF. It’s silver colored and a lot cheaper than the Detail plastics.

cool, thanks for the explanation!

You’re welcome guys. I’m in the process of repairing the design right now, so hopefully I’ll have some good news soon. I’ve got some more technical details of how Sketchup works over in my Ecto Goggles thread, if you’re curious.

The revised design has been submitted to SW. I’ll know how it looks in two weeks. With luck, the shop doors will swing open wide in two weeks.

Also in the order are updates to goggles, figure stand and a trap all-in-one set.

Ok gentlemen! The design on the Gigameter (“Bass Meter” for SW purposes) has been corrected and we are go for public offering!

The 3 piece Trap set is also up, as are the Figure Stand and corrected Goggles.

Thanks again for your feedback and encouragement!

Tom-

I just ordered a Giga Meter, RGB PKE Meter and a set of Goggles from your page. I have got to learn how to use these 3D programs! Imagine what it could do for the RGB packs! Have you considered doing them? The RGB Packs I mean. I have plenty of reference to share, lol.

Mark-

Awesome! Thanks! I hope you like them! The RGB pack are one of those projects that I’ve started so many times and never finished. I need to get serious about that one one of these days. It’s easily the number one thing people ask me about.

Thanks again for ordering! Be sure to post pics of your finished equipment.

Tom-

I forgot to ask before, what program are you using for your designs? I really want to learn how to do this.

I use Google Sketchup. It’s a free program that’s really easy to use.

And call me Dave.

Will do, Dave. Thanks for the info. Did you save any of your pp attempts, and can I import .svg files directly into sketchup?

Sent from my SGH-T959V using Ghostbusters Fans on Android

I have no clue, but that shouldn’t be to hard to figure out with the Google, since it’s their program.

About the “pp” by which I assume you mean proton pack and not whatever else might sound like that, I’m working on a new one right now. I’ll probably post a WIP pic soon to get opinions on.

Yeah, PP shorthand for Proton Pack. Potty training a three year-old girl can really warp your mind. I asked my wife last night if she had to potty before we left to go to dinner. Thankfully she was amused, lol.
