simulating darkness on film

This question is off-topic, but hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction.

Next month I will begin shooting a student short film. (It’s a ghost story that takes place during the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983, if you’re curious.) Many critical scenes, including the initial landing, are supposed to take place in the dark. Anyone with a brain can see the problems that this creates, given the difficulty and expense of simulating darkness for a movie. So I guess my question boils down to this:

  1. How can I simulate darkness during the day?

or

  1. Is there any way to shoot in darkness and have the resulting shots look decent?

The budget for this film is effectively $0, so buying a “day-for-night” filter is out of the question. I’ve got a bit of lighting gear at my disposal but I don’t know how I could possibly use any of it to get the effect I’m going for. I was thinking more along the lines of using dark blue lighting gels to make some kind of a filter. Anyone know anything about making a homemade day for night filter?

One thing that might work in my favor is that the invasion took place under an abnormally bright full moon. This is mentioned in the film’s introduction, so hopefully the audience will be forgiving if the lighting is a little too bright for a realistic night scene.

Any help that you guys (or girls) can throw my way will be much appreciated!

Does the camera you’re using have a “white balance” function?

On thing that can help make a scene look darker than it is, is rather than white balancing the camera on a white card, white balance on a florescent orange card. It will give the picture a bit of blue, it sometimes help things look darker than it really is.

Also taping gels over the lense of the camera can help. But make sure they’re just slightly tinted, other wise you’re picture will turn out “muddy”.

Hope that helps. With out buying a day for night filter it’s really tricky and the results very.

DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY OF THE ABOVE!!! A solid rule is to NEVER attempt effects that are permanent. Rules are meant to be broken, except this one.

You said it is a student short - is this for school, college, etc..? Does the ‘video department’ have lighting? Are you shooting outside/inside?

Always do effects in POST. Play with the colour balance, saturation and hue settings.

If you can shoot at night (strangley enough it is the best method of getting day for night), get creative with lighting. A quick blast of blues, on key elements can pop the background but, for lighting the characters use a standard light with a heavy silk. Only light what you want to see - but don’t forget background elements to give clear dof.

Ecto_skywalker, I am not sure about the specs on the cameras since I have not personally seen them yet. The cinematography aspect of the film is being handled by a friend of mine. (I’m not paying him but he gets a short film to add to his resume. Pretty fair trade, I think.) All I know is that they’re MiniDV handhelds. I don’t even know the brandname.

njukgb, this film is for a college short film contest that is being held early next year. The multimedia department at the college library has a pretty well-equipped studio and handheld cameras you can borrow for free, as well as a nifty editing suite, but I don’t think you can borrow lighting.

The bulk of the film will be shot outdoors. The indoor portions will be no problem to properly light. To add to any nighttime effects, I had planned on adding crickets and frogs chirping in post.

I hadn’t thought of just messing with the colors in post. However, I’m not sure if that’s an option or not. I can’t remember the exact name of the editing program the school has, but I do remember it starts with a V. :? When I get back to school next week, I’ll take a trip down to the multimedia room and get one of their MiniDV cameras to shoot a bit of test footage, then run it through the editor to see what I can do.

Yay, something I know a fair bit about!

Alright, well, shooting day for night is very tricky to have it come out actually looking like night(obviously, the brightness of the sun generally gives it away).

As for things you could do in post, you could just color correct it to give it a blue cast, adjust the various color levels until you get something you’re happy with, then drop the brightness and up the contrast slightly.

You best bet, if you can do it, would be to shoot at night and light it properly. That’s the big tell of a student/amateur film, poor lighting. The other one is poor sound.

A bright HMI light from one direction will be your source of “moonlight” with a blue gel over it. Then a less bright light from the opposite side will be your highlight(for best effect of highlights, try to use the color from the opposite side of the color wheel from your key light(which, in this case, would either be an orange gel or just a tungsten light(if your other light is a HMI daylight balanced one). Finally, assuming you’re in close, you can use a third light to fill in only the faces of your actors(a softbox or a paper lantern would work well).

But, if you haven’t got any of those fun toys/the money to rent them, you can always try to shoot and do it all in post(giving the footage a blue cast, messing with contrast and brightness, playing with the color curves, etc).

One thing to remember, never EVER up the gain on the camera unless you absolutely have to. It introduces all kinds of noise and that leads to artifacts with the way DV compression works which appear in the form of dancing blocks, which if this film is going to be shown on a screen larger than a 27 inch TV, will only get more and more glaringly obvious as the picture gets larger.

Also, unless you’re using one of the various prosumer SD or HD cameras(sounds like, if the department has anything good, they’ll either have Panasonic DVX100’s or Sony PD150’s/VX2000’s, unless they went for multi-lens set ups and went with XL1/s/2’s), don’t try to shoot and frame to letterbox since, assuming you go to say 2.35, you’re effectively removing all kinds of vertical resolution from your picture(this is the reason that the original Star Wars movies, when viewed on the older letterboxed VHS tapes, the stars dance and twinkle and disappear, they’re low resolution).

SD NTSC video is 720X480 pixels. Cropping to, for example, 2.35 wide will cut your vertical resolution by about 180 lines. If you really want that wide screen feel, I’d suggest shooting 16x9 or shooting with an anamorphic adapter for the camera. The DVX has a nice mode called “squeeze” that is anamorphic, the PD150/VX2000 and XL1/s crop down to wide, and the XL2 shoots native 16X9.

What else… um, well, again, if you can shoot at night, try to use existing light and simply add to it. For example, if there’s a street light somewhere near by, add lights near that which are pointed towards where you’re shooting.

Also, if you do any of your own lighting, be sure to shoot out that light set up as, more than likely, you’ll need to change it for different shots. Also, be sure to shoot out the various camera angles. It’s best to finish them up so that you’re not running around setting up the same positions over and over again.

The plugins from that link are for FinalCut for OSX. FinalCut Pro, if you have a student discount, can be gotten from the NYU bookstore for $495(last time I was there). Otherwise, prices will vary depending where you go, but needless to say, it aint cheap. Check with your school, if they have decent cameras or a film program, they likely have an editing lab with Final Cut somewhere.

On old tv shows Zoro for instance, they just used a heavy filter on the camera.. In other words.. They made the camera wear sunglasses lol
