The other ghostbusters

I know it must be really bad to bring them up here. But what does everyone think about Filmation’s ghostbusters?.. I myself really don’t like them at all. It is way too campy, even though. I guess we do have them to thank some what for the name of our favorite ghostbusters. But none the less, how do You all feel about them?

Do you mean those lame Real Ghostbusters?

Cause this site is dedicated to the Filmation Ghostbusters!

For real? O_O Or are You being funny.

i liked the filmation ghostbusters thanks. i wanted a team up when i was a kid.

bash the toon all you want, but leave Larry Storch outta this!

I grew up watching both…at the end of the day, it is what it is.

Say what you want about the show but the toys were pretty cool.

What if Filmation Ghost Busters fandom took over?

(Slightly dated, as it was written before the RGB DVDs were announced)

Fritz, I read every word of that and loved it! Very nice.

On topic - I grew up watching both shows. While I consider RGB to be superior, FGB had it’s place. (It was a pretty cool way to change uniforms.) I had toys to both shows and there were many cross-over adventures played out in our living room.

Who had the Ghostbusters name first? Filmation or our movie?

“GODDAMNIT LEARN TO USE THE INTERNET!”

I only say this because I am certain you don’t know how to pose a rhetorical question.

Sorry I asked.

Okay, according to WikiPedia…

Ghostbusters (later called Filmation’s Ghostbusters) was an animated television series created by Filmation and distributed by Tribune Broadcasting and launched following the success of Ivan Reitman and Columbia Pictures’ 1984 film Ghostbusters. It ran from 1986-1988 in daytime syndication and produced 65 episodes. The cartoon was based on a live-action television show from 1975-1976 titled The Ghost Busters. It is not to be confused with the animated show The Real Ghostbusters, which was based on the 1984 film Ghostbusters. Columbia Pictures had to obtain the rights to the name from Filmation for its film, and after Ghostbusters was a hit, Filmation went into production with its animated series based on the characters from its series. The series is technically called simply “Ghostbusters”, but home video releases use the name “Filmation’s Ghostbusters” to avoid confusion.

The show is also known as The Original Ghost Busters because when Columbia Pictures released the film Ghostbusters in 1984 it neglected the fact that Filmation had already produced a live-action comedy series with that same name in 1975. Filmation sued Columbia in 1985, and as part of the out-of-court settlement the cartoon based on the Columbia Pictures property could not simply be called Ghostbusters. Columbia proceeded to name their cartoon show The Real Ghostbusters to directly distinguish it from the Filmation show.

The 1975 Ghost Busters

Sadie: That is a pretty good summary of what happened. “The Ghost Busters” show in the 70’s (which can now be bought on DVD) was the first thing to have the title. When the 1984 movie was being made, they started negotiations to be able to use the title “Ghostbusters” and filmed several scenes using different names. Apparently, when it came time to film the “paranormal exterminators” outside Dana Barrett’s apartment building, the crowd of extras started chanting “Ghostbusters! Ghostbusters!” even though the name wasn’t for certain yet. At that point, they knew they had to get the name and were able to do so - hence the “Ghostbusters” that most people are familiar with. (Source: one of the stories in Making Ghostbusters). The contract however did not cover the animation title issues. When Columbia started putting together its cartoon, that’s when Filmation sued for the title. Filmation started its own cartoon and Columbia called their cartoon “The Real Ghostbusters.” (Take that Filmation).

While I grew up watching both cartoons, RGB will always be the heavy favorite (though I have both full sets on DVD). While Filmation did technically have the name first, they sure aren’t the ones who made it famous. There is no doubt in my mind that they would not have continued any type of “Ghostbusters” if it weren’t for the 1984 movie.

I never really watched the filmation version but also never got bothered by it’s exsistance. I just found them a bit to weird and all for me to watch myself. I always did like their car though. and I had the house and that piano and stuff because my parents just didnt get that they where different shows and bought from both. I never had the firehouse because of that fact lol.

Just like with he-man. I asked for greyskull - I got snake mountain instead. I never complained though or said it was the wrong stuff.

So the show isnt bad . it was just a bit too weird for me.

never watched a single episode. looks like its similar to Scooby-Doo. dont really care for that type of cartoon. RGB 10 times better…

I watched both back then as well, and as posted above, the FGB toys were alot better than the RBG ones. I enjoy the live action series as well since I enjoy classic comedy. It was very Three Stooges / Laurel & Hardy.

i like all shows under the ghostbusters name but filmation ghostbusters cartoon is my least favorate and i do have complants about it number one they couldent get the job done i mean they dident really bust them the same ghost just came back in the next episode :sigh: but the 70’s show is still a great show i still belive that the 84 ghostbusters and the real ghostbusters were much much better

i love everything with the name ghostbusters but filmations cartoon is my leastfavorate i really only like 25 episodes i mean they dident even trap the ghosts they came back in the next episode what was with that but i do love the 70’s ghostbusters that show is awesome but our ghostbusters are sttill the best
