The Real Science of Proton Packs...

I always figure egon wanted insulation for a stripped solid core cable.

I would agree with insulation, except he’s using pneumatic fittings.

I suppose hydrogen could be used for cooling, I’m just going by the fan names as a starting point. These names have been established, I don’t want to step on toes. And- for all I know a fan got tips from Dan.

Currently I’m in a Vancouver plant

I work for a utility that has 3 nuke plants, a handful of LNG plants and a few coal units we’re shutting down. My unit is responsible for the electricals on two of our nuke plants, so I don’t touch the fossil stuff. You guys don’t blow hydrogen through your generators? We do. Requires a CO2 blowdown on each stop. I wish I had a picture of our old stator. You can see the hydrogen tubes clearly on it.

And nobody has ever stablished what the HGA does, but saying it rehulates hydrogen flow to cool the e-mags for the cyclo isn’t undoing previous fan nomenclature. Just some of my head cannon for explaining function.

Maybe for our purposes trying to work out a somewhat plausible way the pack and thrower could actually work we should consider fudging some component names that are fan made with more accurate terms that would be more technically accurate in the way things would function.

GASP Should we mess with what we pretty much consider established lineage? Hmmmm…

…I like cake.

Hoot represents.

I don’t know. The fan names aren’t all that bad. I mean including things like electrostatic dissipators?

Sorry for the delay, currently reading

I’m sorry if a little off at the moment, I’m trying to finish a bottle of tequila tonight. We all have goals.

I’m starting to like the hydrogen cooling thing. But to be honest, the whole cooling system as a whole bothers me.

I mean, cooling is basically transferring heat from one medium, to another. And even in hydrogen cooling, from what I’m seeing, we’re still using water to transfer to the air. The supply of cold hydrogen becomes a valuable commodity in the system. I was thinking perhaps the hydrogen generation is a source, but I can only imagine that generating it within the cyclotron system would leave it rather hot (blatant guess).

I suppose each pack could have a liquid supply, which would be nice. The hydrogen tank would be coolant, and then be used as fuel. But wouldn’t that limit how long a pack could fire quite drastically? I mean, you can unload a super soaker in no time. Those proton streams seem to have a significant enough volume and run time.

I almost want to make the system crazy and suggest fission is the hydrogen source, but then we get back into the heat issue. But using a cyclotron to tear apart atoms for their protons is interesting. Crazy, but fun. I would say use the filler tube to store waste.

There are so many operational topics on the pack to discuss. I love this. Thank you

Oh, and I almost forgot. the HGA label. I thought to check it. It says it was 'Oxygen Servicing 2200 - 4000 PSIG. So that gives us something more to work with.

It can be a closed loop coolant system using a gas to water cooler for the hydrogen. Allows the coolant to be recycled as opposed to trying to scavange from a ln H-gas generator. So, say there’s a liquid exchanger, or even an air exchanger inside the pack and the hydrogen can recondense to liquid form before making the high pressure loop back to the magnets to pull heat.

It would also play intonwhy the game packs overheat. The time to overheat is the time it takes for the system to saturate and require a blow down (maybe spraying the heat exchanger with water which creates the steam that’s expelled). Any manual vent before that is doing the same but spraying significantly less water.

Yes, but you will have a water loss. I don’t think there is a water makeup on the system.

There isn’t. But I"m just hypotheticalling at this point. Refilling a small water tank is a ton easier than refilling a pressurized hydrogen tank at the end of the day.

I’ve got 2 possibilities.

The first is a little out there in the sci-fi realm. It involves the yellow leg hose. The hose reaches around to the pack, almost as if it hooks up to something we’re not seeing. Almost as if the pack is injecting the suit with something. I like to think a byproduct of the cyclotron can be used as a form of consumable radiation shielding. Some of this excess heat could go to the generation of this fictional stuff.

Another possibility is Ecto. I like to think the filler tube is removable, and stores nuclear waste. It could also be pressurizing, and thermally storing a load. Some of that roof gear might handle it between jobs. We’ve seen at least one freon label on Ecto 1a. Though it like to get a look at Stephen Danes plans, as he had everything labelled and accounted for

Something I posted elsewhere on this forum, I may be wrong about all of it

At first glance, I’m really impressed with the parts listing in the Feig image above. REALLY impressed.

Tritium and Rhenium (especially Rhenium isotope 187) are both viable sources (through beta decay) of light active neutrinos. Though Tritium is an easier source (Rhenium is extremely rare, much rarer than Tritium like the Plasma Pack image says! Especially isotope 187). The lady GB’s Tritium was seized?

Both of those are used to detect KeV sterile warm Dark Matter neutrinos through their interaction with the light active neutrino, as those two substances are very high in light active neutrino count.

Although I’ve always assumed the “Neutrona” thrower in GB1 was a misnomer, and the “ghost / entity” interaction (or lack of) with the Higgs field (entity=no mass =no Higgs boson exchange, yet a manifestation of energy not naturally dropping to a lower energy state (as you would expect through entropy) but persisting) would be better interacted with using ionised particles (positron/positronic system ionisation).

Put in another way: every object with a non zero mass exchanges Higgs particles in the Higgs field. This is what gives all objects their mass. If an “entity” does not have mass and therefore does not exchange Higgs particles, and is in a purely energy state, it should naturally lose energy and drop to a lower state. (It’s the way our entropic Universe works) If it doesn’t (which should be impossible) then there should be constant ionisation of the particles around it.

Plasma thrower I’m not too sure of as the science (to me) was accurate enough with the β particle positron / positronium system ionisation of GB1.

Then again, the famous animation of the wild undulating “Proton stream” as it’s called, is much more akin to a plasma state substance oscillating in a magnetic field / stable wavelength surrounded by a very high energy electric (electron/positron) charge (blue sparks).

If the field oscillating and containing the “proton stream” is electric (electro-dynamic) instead of magnetic then that would explain the blue sparks surrounding the yellow “stream”.

But “Plasma” is far too general. Plasma of what? That’s like saying “liquid” thrower. Plasma is simply a state of matter. On the other hand, a good way to keep it vague. I’m pretty impressed by the (apparent) science that has gone into Feig’s packs.

But like I said above, I may be wrong about all of it.

If you want to delve into the feig pack, go for it. I’m going to keep them separate though. Just a preference.

For the original Proton Pack, we know we’re using proton (and possibly positronium) stream. Using a plasma stream as a carrier seems to defeat the purpose. The gel of electrons would cancel out the positive charge effect of the protons against the ghost.

Though to be fair, when Akroyd said the stream had positrons in it, I was also worried. Because the positrons will react with the electrons in the air, and positron/electron reactions yield gamma rays… which has one of two effects. Either you become a raging strong green behemoth, or your succumb to cancerous tumors. Unless you have some fancy shielding for the proton streams gama rays, you’ll need a couple feet of concrete. Unless we question the concentration of positronium. Hopefully as trace as possible.

The effects people say they were also animating elements of the beam going back into the wand. A charge back flow? Could the banjo on the end be dealing with that?

Anyway, I’m starting my shift today. Probably won’t reply for a week

Yeah very interesting points. I agree we should keep the Feig pack separate and out of this discussion and perhaps create a separate thread to not mix both up. But some aspects mentioned above apply to the original aswell.

  1. I don’t know enough particle physics to agree with you if the negative charge of electrons would cancel out the positive charge on the positrons though. It’s not a matter/antimatter reaction. Both aspects of the stream could be kept separated using electric, electro dynamic or magnetic currents. No idea how it works. But the wildly undulating nature of the classic proton stream (to me) indicated a plasma state of matter. I don’t know any directional, focused stream of high speed elementary particles that doesn’t travel in a straight line? (Unlike electrical or voltage discharges or lighting, etc.)

Agree on the charge back flow. Aykroyd specifically instructed the SFx crew to have the wands shoot outwards but for there to also be the appearance of streams going back into the wands at the moment of discharge. You can see this if you play the SFx in slow motion on the dvd and bluray discs.

  1. I don’t think that manifestations were specifically determined to be negatively charged. Just that the volume of space around them has a specific ionization constant (maybe negatively charged)

  2. Aykroyd was very specific as a writer about the science in GB. He thought of the idea of GB after reading an article in the American Society for Psychical Research that dealt specifically with combining Quantum Physics with Parapsychology and what the scientifically theorised make up and physical molecular state would be of actual manifestations.

He mentioned details of the article (Regarding the proposed scientific quantum makeup of manifestations) in the full version of this video, which is no longer available online. If anyone has it, I’d be interested in seeing it again.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/videos/2009/10/26/dan-and-peter-ackroyd-on-ghosts.html

I have not been able to track the article itself (I have seen it referenced numerous times) and it sounds like complete fantasy of course, but in parapsychological academic circles it isn’t. There are many current academic parapsychology courses dealing with Quantum Physics and Parapsychology (just do a google search, there are a number of pdf articles). Most articles are on how quantum entanglement or “action at a distance” may relate to statistical understanding of different psi events.

Anyhow,

Here are some videos where Aykroyd goes into some detail about his research that went into Gb.

Let me know if you find anything I missed.

To be quick,

Positrons are the anti particle to electrons. So it IS an antimatter reaction if you suspend Positrons within plasma.

Maybe as an anti particle, Akroyd thought he could still make a positive plasma? I don’t think it would work though.

Yes, I think I’ve seen similar interviews. I’ll click the links later. It was in one interview where he said ghosts were negative. A little hookey, but something to work with. If only to grasp at something tangible

Whoops, you are right of course, my bad.

I think I was thinking of protons/neutrons instead of electrons.

I can’t figure it out, I’m almost inclined to try to find and email him to ask how far exactly he thought the science of it through.

There are tons of people who try to find a scientific explanation of how lightsabers could work if they existed.

I think if they can do it so should we.

In my opinion the yellow hose in terms of design is the work of a brilliant designer to balance the uniform. The wand hose goes from camera upper left to lower left. The yellow hose goes from lower right to upper right. I think it started as a symetrical design decision but it could be my imagination.

PS: This is why I love the original GB. All the thought that went into it; design, science, comedy, etc.

This guy has detailed manuals on how GB equipment is supposed to work (@esp. The P.K.E)…

It’s awesome work.
