This thread is for offering a DIY kit for what I believe is one of the most neglected of the Ghostbusters props:

THE K.U.D METER.

The K.U.D. Meter kit is a direct replacement printed circuit board kit with updated switches and harnesses. It uses the existing gauge, speaker and battery compartment that are part of a Radio Shack Micronta 3001 Metal Detector.

It comes with:

· The main board w/ rotary switch assemblies

· Harness for the gauge

· Harness for the speaker

· Blinking red LED harness w/ LED holders & connector

· Battery harness w/ power converter

· Power switch

· RGB lights and lens assembly

· Chrome end cap

· Heat shrink tubing

· A link to a PDF tutorial on how to install the kit

Powered by an Arduino Nano and the WT588D sound chip, it has many cool features.

· Lighted display for the gauge powered by 2 RGB (Red-Green -Blue) LEDs. Selected with a rotary switch, you can have it illuminate Green, Red, Blue, White, Purple, Yellow or Orange. It also has an off position.

· A 10 position rotary switch, which can cycle through 8 different sound effects, the first being an off position. The effects range from futuristic scanner sounds to movie quotes of Winston Zeddemore from both movies. There is also a selector position that plays all the sound files one after the other.

· Volume control.

· The gauge needle will actually move and react to the sound file being played!

· Blinking red LED to install in a masher as seen in the movie.

· Flat shaft on/off toggle switch.

· Low power consumption for hours of continued use.

· It runs off of 6 AA batteries.

Note:

You’ll need a functioning Radio Shack Micronta 3001 Metal detector to make use of the kit, not to mention the correct kitchen utensils. The body of the metal detector should be in somewhat decent shape. You will be using the metal detectors speaker, gauge, battery compartment and part of the extension tube that goes to the metal detector head. All will have to be functioning and in good shape to make use of the kit.

Definitely interested in bringing my KUD meter to life, but price seems high compared other soundboards.

Yeah, I know it’s kind of an odd ball item and I figured there wouldn’t be much demand for it. I designed and built it because I wanted to see it do more than just flash a single LED, plus I don’t think anyone has ever done it before. It was my first attempt at building a kit. I learned a lot and wouldn’t call it a waste.

I lowered the price to $159.99. I won’t be able to do a full run of these, but I do have a few of the prototype kits left, ready to go if anyone is interested.

I agree with you that GB2 has some of the best but most underappreciated props. Im going to check the condition on my micronta internals and will send you a PM. I definitely want a kit.

Gotta Ask - Where did you find that potato masher? I can’t seem to locate that brand.

BTW Finally got my kit - I guess the post office wanted to take it on a tour of Florida!

It’s a KitchenWare LP 901 Stainless Steel 10” potato masher and I found them on Ebay. Your best bet is to do a saved search for them so you’ll get email notifications if and when they become available. I also contacted the guy I got them from to see if he has any more.

That was strange with USPS. I was watching the tracking and scratching my head with what they were doing with the package. I’m glad it finally arrived safe and sound.

Thanks for the pointers Greg - Still having no luck on the masher, I’ve got one kinda OK but not close enough for my OCD… Did it take you a long tome to get the right ones or am I just being impatient?

Honestly, I haven’t seen one on Ebay for a while now. I started this project in April or May of this year and they seemed pretty abundant. I contacted the guy I bought them from and he doesn’t have any left. He said they were good sellers and will look into trying to find more. If I hear back from him I’ll contact you right away.

Here’s an Ebay link to an alternative. It’s thicker and more heavy duty. You’d also have to mount it differently. I believe these were the ones that some guys were mounting internally by cutting a slot in the case and hot gluing it in from the inside.

Well just finished my kud! Actually went with the first potato masher after collecting like 5! The sounds & lights are great - very fun obscure prop!
