Well I believe I have finally found a way to compensate for the weather and still get a quality shell…
The first test pull of the new technique was not perfect but it was a giant leap in the right direction…
The only thing wrong with the first new pull was a few air bubbles and a little orange peel in the surface, both could literally be fixed without much work but I want to get it just that much closer… Please disregard the color of the pull as I tint them different with each generation so I can easily identify them… And sorry about the not so good picture but it’s muddier then all hell outside and when the dogs saw the camera they decided it was show off time in the mud, so I had to make it quick…
And for those that have inquired about the HGA and N-filter here are again a few quick shots… The HGA is a modified version of Sean’s I added the fake weld lines as his was clean edged… The N-Filter is a brand new build, I was going to again use Sean’s as he was again gracious enough to allow me to do it, but I have had several inquiries as to the ability to have it without holes, so people can do the irregular or regular hole pattern… So rather then try and patch his holes in I found it better to just make a new one… It’s thin walled just like his, so when you drill the holes they look “right” although not a perfect bore out, PVC is not really all that symmetrical and straight to start with and chucking it up in the lathe straight to bore it out was a big PITA! It’s close but there was a little wobble, less by the the side you drill the holes, almost nothing at that end so no worries… I will cast it up without holes and then probably cast it up with the idealized evenly spaced holes, and offer either version to the buyers…
It’s moving along slower then I want but it’s getting there…

Thanks, that is exactly what I was aiming for when I did them… I wasn’t totally concerned about making them dead on accurate to real welds but more of simply making them a convincing representation in a subtle but not overdone way…

Quick update while I’m between fiberglass layers…
As should be obvious I have been experimenting on trying to figure out a way to get a decent pull in the less then friendly weather…
First pulls that were traditional fiberglass were less then stellar, but as you can see a few post up I was finally able to get something to work for me…
So for the last few days I have been tweaking and refining the process… Had a big setback when one of the ideas really didn’t pan out well resulting in me having to spend a few hours cleaning and detailing the the mold… Won’t be venturing down that path again total mess…
Anyway I believe I have finally figured out a process that works in this weather, the shell I’m working on now is actually “working” meaning it’s doing what it is supposed to do or at least what I expect to happen, I really have high hopes for this shells process being the final process I will use to finish up this run…
I’ll wrap it up tonight and demold tomorrow, if all goes well I’ll post pictures and then we are off to the races… It will be a hybrid shell, not traditional fiberglass like I had hoped for, but it will still be fiberglass just my own recipe and technique… I believe it will be equally strong and the process should result in a real nice outside surface for prepping and painting…
More to follow tomorrow when I demold the pumpkin…
