Okay, I’m going to throw in my opinion on these. I picked up Winston yesterday; they came into my local FP last week, I was tipped off about it and instantly asked for Winston to be put aside for me until payday since I knew he’s short packed. They only got one case too, so it payed off. I would like to have dropped £100 on the full set but couldn’t quite afford it, but now I have Winston I figure I can find the other three at my leisure.
Things I like:
The uniform is pretty damn good, I like that they bothered with the ‘alt colours’ on the suits. The logo seems pretty secure and well done (I picked up a Mattel Retro Batman last month and his chest emblem came off in one piece after about half an hour, I took him back for a refund but it was a damn shame because it was an awesome figure.) The Ghost Trap is pretty good, slightly more so than the pack and the gun. I like also the torso being moulded in black to simulate the t-shirts, again a nice touch. And the ELBOW PADS, awesome AND it appears Mattel can count, unlike Kenner ;). The overall look and feel of the figure is pretty good, they are a smidge too expensive for what they are but I’m happy to buy the others and fully intend to.
Things I dislike:
The Proton Pack…nice effort, but it feels very half-arsed and like Mattel weren’t sure what they were doing. The pack itself seems to have elements that are more like over-simplified bits of the MOVIE pack, AND why only two red windows on the Cyclotron?; the gun is definitely a simplified movie version but done in cartoon colours; I don’t know if they deliberately made them this way because of the Citizen Ghost Peter being from a ‘movie flashback as it were’ and are simply reusing the sculpt, but the gun is nothing like the one in RGB and it’s very obvious. And it’s not like there’s no reference pics of the RGB equipment out there. Also, where is the pack’s own belt?
Winston’s face sculpt seems a smidge off…actually from what I’ve seen they all are but Winston’s is more noticeable I think
Arms need more articulation, at the very least a bicep swivel, so that they can hold the Proton Guns in a more convincing/accurate way.
Where is the trap hook on either the pack or the belt? I’ve got the cable looped over the pack with the foot pedal tucked under the pack and the trap hanging by his side.
No Ecto-Goggles for Ray is a ridiculously huge omission, and that the Sniffer gets done but not the Goggles is just plain pointless. The Sniffer and PKE are so like the Kenner versions, it makes me wonder how much ‘research’ Mattel actually did and how varied their ‘source material’ was.
I would have preferred a 6" line although to be honest, at that size they’d have had more chance of being better than Kenner’s and I’m not sure I’d like that. These things are NOT better than the Kenner figures, and it’s not just childhood bias making me say that. They’re different, but not necessarily better. The Kenner ones had better Proton Packs for starters. Plus, Kenner had an ECTO-1, there’s no way we’ll get a 1/8 scale ECTO-1 (although I am currently assembling, via partwork magazine, a 1/8 007 Aston Martin DB5 with full working gadgets, so you know, stranger things have happened
)
I’d buy an ECTO-1 that fit these for sure, even if the sculpt and detailing was as basic as Kenner’s
