Toughening a delicate spacer

So I’m in the midst of constructing two proton packs. To save time, I bought these “starter” packs on Ebay. The quality was good, but the spacer was a bit on the delicate side. It’s made out of two thick sheets of styrofoam glued together, painted black.

Is there anything I can do to toughen the spacer’s exterior that won’t melt the foam?

Maybe I should remove the foam spacer, trace it out and use MDF instead?

Does home depot carry sheets of mdf? Is it cheap? I assume MDF is tougher against bumps and damage than the foam I have now?

Yes, Home Depot does sell MDF, and no, its not all that expensive. You should note, the spacer doesn’t really take all that much abuse -it’s usually the ion arm that gets beat up. You may want to build out the rest of your pack and worry about the spacer later.
