Unless you are keeping the woodgrain in tact with a nice clear coat signifying its an actual wood pack, do yourself a giant favour and buy some precast resin ones, lol
MDF with a sanding table, router, scroll saw, circular saw, air tank & air nailer, and never start a pack without a Dremel. I made the pack and wand myself and it took me on and off about a year. I even placed a sliding door battery box in the mother board area. If your a good woodworker then I say do it. I love my pack and I take so much pride in having it. If your ok and a little iffy I’d buy a shell and make the wand yourself. Best thing with MDF is that to make boxes you can tack it with super glue and then layer the two part epoxy over the seam for a lasting hold.
My pack is 98% wood (the thrower is resin) and the thing that annoys me the most with it is the weight, it feels like I need to see a chiropractor after wearing it after a con ( I actually had a deep bruise over my shoulder after wondercon this year) or an event. I recently purchased a resin shell and can lift it with 2 fingers. do yourself a favor and purchase a shell. It will save your back, it’s easier to work with, and a heck of a lot lighter.
But Good luck with your build and please post some pictures once you get started!
Instead of wood consider something like styrene. In the end it will still likely be heavier than a fiberglass shell, but it would be lighter than wood and you wouldn’t have to worry about grain.
I second TC. I’ve built two packs out of styrene. You can heat it and bend it, bondo it, sand it, and best of all, the only tool you will need is a utility knife. Although if you have plans to do sound. I would go with a shell. While it is a more expensive option, they have far more room inside them than anything built from scratch.
