So last week, while visiting the Ghostbusters of NH at the Touch a Truck event, I learned that they were also going to be at the Granite State Comic Con the very next weekend. I wasn’t sure if I was going to attend because I didn’t have a uniform or anything, but ths very morning, at 8am, just two hours before the comic convention was about to start I decided to do the impossible… I would create a keymaster costume in the few short hours I had before the convention ended, and attend the con.
The next several hours were spent biking all over town, roughly 20 miles, looking for parts. I stopped at Hannaford Supermarket, Stop and Shop, Walmart, and Target looking for a suitable colander and chin strap. I finally settled on getting both from Walmart. I also stopped at Lowes, and Home Depot to get the bolts, nylon spacers, and wire crimp rings I’d need. An old power supply, some spare wire, and a bit of foam I had laying around supplied the rest of the materials. And as for the glasses, I got lucky and Party Time had a perfect pair… and they were only $2!
Racing home around 12:30 with only two and a half hours to do the build, I glanced down for a moment at my tire which looked like it was wobbling a bit… then looked back up just in time to see a wire from a power pole which intersected the sidewalk. I hit the thing at full speed, and flipped over the handlebars, landing on my back. Miraculously, I had only a slight scrape on my arm, and a small cut on one finger. My back is still a bit sore, but amazingly my glasses didn’t come off and break, nor did my iPhone which I had in my pocket get damaged. Even the colander and supplies I had in my backpack came away unscathed.
Continuing home, sore, I arrived around 1pm, patched myself up, and then proceeded to tear apart the colander which had two large handles and a ring on the bottom. The ring popped off easily enough, but when popping off one of the handles, it sliced into two of my fingers! Ugh. I should have known not to rush. The last time I was rushing to build a prop I went and superglued my fingers to my mouse.
Anyway, I decided at that point to cut my losses and left the second handle on the colander, and moved it around back where it was covered by all the wires from the power supply. And thankfully, I didn’t need to enlarge the holes to get the bolts to go through the holes, so installing the nylon spacers was a breeze. And the wires I wrapped around a screwdriver tightly to make them springy.
When it came time to add the chin strap, that was a pain in the ass though. I ended up duct taping foam to the inside of the colander to cushion my head, and I ran the strap under that and figured out how to run it through the chin strap in a way which would work with just the one strap. Lastly, I made some double sided duct tape and stuck that to the foam, and then to a winter hat, which I wore, rolled up, to keep the thing on my head. Not a perfect solution, but with only two hours to finish the thing before the con ended I’m quite frankly shocked I got it done.
Finally, I arrived at the con with only an hour to spare, and surprised the guys there who didn’t even recognize me at first. I then rpoceeded to goof around and tripped over their Ecto cooler while yelling that they would perish in flames and they called me an asshole. I also got mood slime all over the floor while posing for photos with it. Good times. 
Oh, and a bunch of people there recognized who I was, which was a relief. One dude thought I was Doc Brown though. :walterpeck:
I’ll post some more pictures once I get the ones the guys took. They’re a lot better than the other ones I got on my phone. It took a while to get into the character!
