Your thoughts about the Ghostbusters 2016 film?

Well, here’s the thing. Feig didn’t say “the fanbase,” he said “geek culture.” And that I do agree that geek culture has its underbelly of disturbed individuals who allow a fictional story to become more important than real people. I’m a Trekkie, I’ve seen many examples of this, lol. A lot of them I encountered barely seemed to know about Ghostbusters, except that it’s one of those nostalgia movies they need for their geek cred. And they saw GB16 targeting a non-geek audience, and they decided to get possessive in a very ugly way. I think those were the ones attacking Jones and Feig. And I dont mind them being called on it, because they did give the fanbase an undeserved bad name.

1st time I saw it, I liked it. 2nd time I saw it, I loved it. It’s not the greatest movie of all time, but it was funny and enjoyable and I would see it again. Hopefully in 3D. The theater was full of laughter the first time we went - which is rare these days. I have nothing against people who didn’t like the film. I do have something against people who 1.) Negatively review everything related to the movie without having seen the movie. 2.) Denigrating anyone who saw and liked the movie. 3. Hacking and trolling (posting throwing up emojis on every Ghostbusters thread that has any reference to the new movie, attacking people on those threads who support the movie, etc.) Why can’t we live and let live?

Same for all three of my audiences. I’m sorry so many fans can’t see that. I’m sorry that kind of positivity makes them so angry that they want it to end.

It doesn’t represent the community, but it can leave a bad impression - be it one of the many people who comprise this forum’s blacklisted seller list, or a self-identifying fan saying something abhorrent on social media.

Hunter, every community has their share of negative people. While the people Kingpin mentioned don’t represent the community as a whole, they are a blemish on us. it’s like… okay, say there are a few Star Trek conventions going on. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Star Trek fans there… all for the love of their particular franchise. Now, sprinkle a few assholes in the mix. These guys are dead set on their belief that Captain Archer is the best captain and if you disagree with them, they punch you in the throat. Don’t know ALL the crew members? They push you into the wall and slap you around. This goes on for months. Eventually, word gets out about things, BUT because it’s all word of mouth, details start to fade and just boils down to “Yo, you hear about those crazy Star Trek fans just beating people up? It’s insane!”

Because of the actions of a few bad eggs, the entire fan base gets tarnished. That’s kinda what happened here. People attacked the movie, that’s FINE. It’s a thing. You can do that. Where things got COMPLETELY out of hand was the personal attacks on the cast, crew, and fans on BOTH sides of the argument. It got out of hand, got WAY too big and too public and yeah, we all got blanketed as assholes by those actions AND misquoted tweets. What’s scary is that I’ve met people who are HAPPY this happened because now they feel like they have carte blanche to be dicks in public while wearing a GB uniform.

What I love is the constructive nature of this debating. You guys have valid points of view, well thought out argued with civility. Bravo!
