A question about materials...

Right, so this Friday it’s payday, and I’m gonna get all of the materials for my pack and I just need to know…

ABS or HIPS (high impact polystyrene)???

Any help would be great, thanks guys.

Personally I think MDF is better. But if youw ant to use plastic then I think ABS is what most use…

Lawrence

or styrene

Yeah I think ABS plastic is Styrene…

Any chance you could explain why you think MDF is better? Just curious…

Nope, they are not exactly the same

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)

It is a copolymer made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene. The proportions can vary from 15 to 35% acrylonitrile, 5 to 30% butadiene and 40 to 60% styrene.

So i guess you could say Styrene is a component of ABS, ABS in sheet form is usually glossy whereas Styrene is more dull and less expensive.

Example: Stormtrooper armor is made in ABS and Styrene versions, the ABS is usually more expensive, glossy and tends to be thicker.

As Colin mentioned ABS isn’t “styrene” as far as the material many of us use. HIPS is what people most commonly refer to as styrene. Personally, I’d go with HIPS since it’s cheaper and if you end up needing shapes or really thin pieces etc you can get it at hobby shops and it’ll all bond together with the proper solvents without any worry.

Where’s that Ramjet when you need him, Queen of Styrene.

Thanks alot, well to everyone, who helped I really didn’t want to just dive into this head first without knowing what I needed. Friday can’t get here soon enough!!!
