A scratch built Proton pack, in a week? 69 hours going on..

Very cool build. Guess I will keep some of the things in mind when getting to my own pack, making it more lighter.

Okey, I know that you like big picture updates…

We had some works on the Rookie’s pack today, gor some electronik parts as well as some other stuff for the pack..

The object of today was that the proton pack would be ready for our rookie to take it to his home… WITH working sound systems…

See if we can make it..

Another time, and another place Highlander… The Rookie Proton Pack project was taken to another place, for works… A kitchen in some one’s home…

We need to get the project done in some anohter place, as the Mother was coming home…

That aside… Nick-A-Tron’s parts… Nuf said…

Adding parts for fun…

Our rookie adding some details here and there…

Resistance is futile… Or.. Who you are gonna call…

Business, this looks like, yees..

The bottom tube is NoT green… It is blue…

Anything wrong here..?

More holes drilled for the speakers…

The secondary speaker was placed in place, as well as the primary one. The speakers were saved from some trash, for this and the Hybrid Pack.

More room for parts here, than in the Hybrid…

The speakers in the proton pack… Now, we need to add the soundboard our rookie bought from our English GB friend… This is looking mighty fine to us…

Disks added. Thank you Nickatron props here!!!

Soldering the secondary speaker in place…

Everything seems to be in place…

After the smoke was gone, all things good and ugly, this is the result…

A functioning sound system in our Rookie’s pack, just waiting for the Cyclotron, and Proton Gun…

We originally meant to get the pack ready for our rookie to get it to his home, but after some talks we agreed that there is some more work to be done before our rookie can have his hands on it…

This now totals few more hours done, so the total is now 42 hours of works today!

This pack is working now, just needs a lights and a proton gun. And, did i forget to mention a Cyclotron…

Well those are coming, in a very near future, in a galaxy near you…

More in the near future.

You know who to call. Stay tuned, and thanks!

Ok, the pack is about to be ready for going it’s new home… Still more works to do, the Proton Gun build is not even started, some electronics are not done, etc…

Nick-A-Tron’s parts came through, and we did put them in place, where possible. Made the pack a bit more ready looking, and not some shabby MDF thing it was in the past…

Still the one MAJOR component is missing, the Cyclotron. This makes the pack looking very different than when it is in place…

Thus;

A VERY rough cast of the Cyclotron… As said before, I will not go through with detail how I made the cast here. It WAS made from the teflon pan in my own pack, and is not recasted from anyone’s build.

Test fitting it on the pack. Looking good, just need to figure out how to do the bottom rim on the Cyclotron. I do not want to cut it out of MDF, as was done in our first packs…

Finally figured out how to add the rim to the bottom, and the first bondo is sanded. Still miles to go, but getting there..

More frosting, now who’s happy enough to try this cake..

Better after each sandpaper…

Nearly done, needs tor dry, and then more sand paper, and more bondo, and we are ready for paint…

Nice fit, on the pack…

The Cyclotron is the last big part that is missing from the pack. I will try to get it done, for the weekend, so it can go to new home for time being. The Proton Gun will be done some other time, after the pack is done.

This pack now has working sounds, with GBFans soundboard, and the Crank Knob operates as the volume knob. No need to take the potentiometer out from the GBFans board, just adjust the volumes, and it is smooth sailing, and LOUD!!

This project is now pulling 46 hours, counting only work hours on this.

With any luck, the pack is wearable, and going home in the next weekend. Any electronics works and Proton Guns can easily be added later on…

Edit; Just did measured how heavy this pack is, with the Bumper, Frame and Ion Arm attacher. Full ten kiloes, for this baby, and we do not even have the lights, batteries and Proton Gun… Gonna hit that screen accurate 14+ kiloes on this, when ready… Luckily the ALICE Frame takes the weight of the shoulders…

Cheers, and thanks for tuning in.

Looking great!!

Thank you Nick! Your resin parts did the magic on this pack!

Now, I have been taking some time away from this project, and even though I want this to be finished as soon as possible, some free weekends were needed. Also, we had a 501st friend coming from Japan to visit us, Michiko the Pink Snowtrooper, and that meant that there was some days for that as well…

As for this update, I am on sick leave, and bored as hell, as I got the flu, and fever to accompany it. Last evening I had near 39 degrees in celcius, and was so tired as to not be able to lift much of a finger. Still, after rest and some medicine, I had strenght to do some work on this.

First two pictures are nearly two weeks ago…

The Pack was attached to the Alice Frame, using some nuts as spacers. Still need to figure a better ones, but these do the trick.

The Cyclotron was also painted, and attached to the pack. Not to worry about few uneven bits here and there… They will be hidden adter the lights are in place…

The pack was then taken to our rookie’s home, as I needed room in my own…

Now, as I got some time, and strenght for it, I measured and cut out few bits… Taking the measurements from my own pack’s Proton Gun made things easier… I made one Proton Gun for our Swedish member year ago, the same way.

That gun was done in a week…

Killing two birds in the same time, I cut out parts for TWO Proton Guns. I thought that just as well I might do two, and kill out the extra material in the same time. No need to save any small MDF and wood parts after this…

Using staples to keep the parts together, I glued all bits together. Rough cuts, but still they are going nicely..

With the rear handles in place. The left one has plastic tube in, and the right one is wooden. I need to figure out some magic to route out the cables throught the handle on the right one..

That leaves me to this end. Two new Proton Guns are coming nicely, and I might do some repairs on my own as the weldings are added to the new guns…

About three hours in total, today, but I think there is also some other little things done here and there, I am evening out this to total of 50 hours.

Coming together nicely. Our rookie said that he just had the blue battery from Ebay, so with the soundboard already installed, and gunlights and batteries also waiting, we just need the custom lights for the Pack done, and this pack will have 100% electronics in when finished..

Cheers, I’ll hit the sack now, and take some rest.

This is some amazing work (especially for the amount of time it took)!

If I’m ever going to create a pack of my own, I’m going to need a huge infusion of cash, or of this kind of unbridled talent…

BTW, I don’t run into Finnish people too often, so I’m curious if you’re familiar with either of my favorite products of your country…Nightwish and The Cursing Hedgehog?

Thanks Peterson, and yeah, I am familiar of both of those…

Been a fan of Nightwish early on, and have seen them few times. Not sure about the current lineup on the band, though… I liked the first new album without Tarja Turunen, just the Irish feeling of the album. Haven’t actually seen the band in a long time, and it would have been nice to see them with Agneta… But, there is so much to see…

And as for the Cursing Hedgehog, I trust that there are few Finnish folks who have not seen it. It has ‘Hello Kittied’ itself to nearly everything you can buy, be it a bumper sticker, towel or a coffee mug…

Not to worry, I love the little ■■■■■■… In nine times out of ten, the spiky guy says exactly what I have in mind.. Just hope it won’t go sour…

Still coping up with my flu and corresponding fever, 37.5 degrees in the mornigns for the whole week, and nearly 39 in the evenings. I am calling the doctor tomorrow, if this not go away before the weekend.

I had something to do with the Proton Guns..

About a hour, and the Proton Guns are nicely going on…

Placement for each hole was measured, and marked, on both guns. The resin parts from Nickatron props were superglued on rookie’s gun to show progress, and, frankly, to keep the pieces in place, and safe. The little adjustment knob, barely seen in the right corner of the gun was thought to be lost, but not to worry, the cat was playing with it, just as I was getting worried… She was awarded with belly rubs for helping us.. She loves those..

Between the guns, there is an aluminum profile bar, with the barely noticeable measurements for the rear instrument panel for the Slo-Blo light and triggers and such. They will be cut from real aluminum, as it is easier to wire up these babies…

Sadly, all greeblies we had were used on the rookie’s gun… The one on the left will be a bit sad looking, when both are finished, what with no resin parts…

Not to worry, Nick provides the parts in his shop, for the future owner of the gun.

This is it for this mornign, I won’t be going on to actual cutting and drilling, way too tiresome…

I’ll hit the sacks, and hope to get better soon.

Cheers, and thanks for tuning in.

Awesome. Only bands I’ve ever seen live are Muse, Metric, and U2. I like Tarja, Anette, and Floor, though I’d have to pick Tarja as my fave. You should check out the Wacken 2013 show they did with Floor, it’s epic.

My intro to Nightwish, ironically, was a fan-vid of the Extreme Ghostbusters finale (where the originals return to action too) set to “10th Man Down.” (Sadly the vid has long been taken down, but a while back I did see a RGB fanvid set to the same tune).

I love the Hedgehog, wish he was more popular over here. This is one of my favorite strips, reminds me of riding the back of the ATV with my nephew driving:

Hope you’re feeling better!

You did a great job of making a proton pack.

Thanks for the complements guys!

A small update, been doing some works on this pack, but no much pictures from that…

Drilling bondoing, sanding, the usual…

Ok, here are the Proton Guns works for rookie and extra gun..

Note that the handles on the extra gun on the right ARE longer than the original packs. They were left with some extra length just in case they need it.

The holes for Jupiter light systems have been cut, drilled and filed so the lights and everything would fit in the guns. Although only one light set is here, both guns were done on same time, the extra gun can then be updated later if necessary…

And here they are wiht black primer… Some screws are still showing, just hoping that this will not show after another primer or so…

This was done in Wednesday, and as such, these guns can be painted again in 17.9.

The Maston paints need a week before they can be painted again, or the finish is VERY bad…

Whoa, nearly an hour, and the Rear Cylinder for our Rookie’s pack is done and primered..

Another hour done, and the Rear Instrument Bar and the Trigger Boxes were cut, drilled and attached together.

They still need the cover plate on the Intrument Bar, and the opening under it, as well as some bits for the aluminium tube ends as well.

These Proton Guns are proving to be more work than the one I did for your Swedish friend year ago.. Seems that there is something hindering the work process when you need to clean up the place, and entertain the cat as well…

Still, these are going good enough. Sadly, only one gun will be finished, the other, with missing dials and what not greeblies will be put to storage for possible future use.

This pulls now a total of 58 hours works, and needs more…

Cheers, hoping to get this pack finished due to the Stockholm Scifi Expo early in December..

Rakastan Suomi

Outstanding work…

Smallish update!

Few hours here and there, the proton gun is going well with the pack in our rookie’s home, there are only N-Filter and the Proton Gun to work with.. Here is the update of those;

The N-Filter holes were drawn on a paper template, and the centers were drilled with 2mm drill.

Followed by 10mm drill for the holes… This took some time, as the filter is 3mm thick metal, and this meant that the parts were really hot after few holes.

As said before, this N-Filter is about 98% accurate on Stephan’s plans. Accurate enough for us.

And I DO have more of these…

With the cat approving the project, she does love new cat toys everywhere…

Some wood parts were cut out.

And then glued in place. They did need some glue and sanding before this, of course.

Both Proton Guns were primered, as were the metal N-Filter. They still have some works to be done, the N-Filter needs the welds but this is going well.

Added the resin parts from Nick-A-Tron to the rookie’s proton gun, unfortunately we only have one set of these at the moment… Still, easy add on, later on.

The front handles on both guns are 32mm wood parts, and so, no extending tips on these Proton Guns… Still, the electronics for both guns can be added with little work, just cut a channel on the wood under the grip, and wires can go without worries..

The project has been going on for more hours than I thought, the Proton Gun taking more work, more little bits here and there to cover… Still, with two guns going on at the same time, these are going nicely.

See if these get finished before Halloween, or the Stockholm Scifi Expo in December.

Total work hours for this project is now 67 hours and counting.

Cheers, and stay tuned!

The left ear is upside down (the one with the 45 degree bevel); other than that, everything is looking great!

At first when I saw the title I was like, “WHATEVA! My friends and I did a pack with lights and sound in a day while drunk as Hell!”

Then I realized we had a shell, gun kit, and really all the parts laying around and you are doing a scratch build…NOT the same.

Aside from the aforementioned left ear, great work so far, I look forward to seeing it finished!

Thanks guys, I would have missed that on the gun tips…

Dunno why I made such mistake, the measurements and reference are done from here, and from my own pack, where the left ear is in the correct way.

Still, the mistake was easy to fix, just tear the part lose, add some superglue and it is a go. Easy, all too easy… There is paint in the middle, so glues do not attach the parts that good. All well and good, this proves that I need to secure the ear/s with screws to make sure they do not drop out… Superglue alone will not do…

Ok, with the front bits corrected, I went out to take some scraps of balsa I had lying around, from the 1/12 scale Ecto project. (I will be continuing that, I promise…)

I had just enough balsa to make out the handles, and after few minutes with Dremell, they were ready for some fiberglass resing to strenghten them up a bit.

After primer, and some sanding, they were screwed in place. The guns look more and more business!

And, the white light on the other Proton Gun is there just to make sure I knew what gun was for the rookie and which was the extra one… It will be corrected as soon as I can find the second orange hat light from the boxes..

Add two more hours to the total. 69 hours going on this project!

Cheers, more to come!
