First off, hi first post here 
So I’m working on a proton pack build, and being how I’m trained to mount electronics to things, I don’t feel quite comfortable using aluminum for the motherboard. What I want to do is use possibly thin oak with second pieces of wood atop of that for mounting the cyclotron lights and the (I don’t know the actual name for it) blue riser light.. thingy. and then also using vertical laid pieces of wood in substitution of the brackets.
Would this work assuming I stored in the pack in low humidity? I REALLY hate drilling metal 
I haven’t used wood, so I can’t speak for issues with humidity. I don’t think it’s as good a choice for the Motherboard as metal, but I know some folks have plodded ahead with using it.
Drilling through an aluminium motherboard was relatively easy as I recall, I had a lot more trouble when I was drilling my solid aluminium Trap pedal plate.
And the “blue riser light” is commonly referred to as the Power Cell lights.
Drilling aluminum isn’t all that difficult. Just be sure to use a sharp drill bit, and lots of lube. Kerosene is the best lube for aluminum, but WD-40 will get the job done too. I used MDF on my stunt pack, and I regret it everyday I look at it.
I suppose I can always try both out and use whichever generally turned/works better. Still really iffy about mounting the electrical components to the aluminum xD
I traced out cardboard templates of all my electrical components and made spacers, that way the boards didn’t arc on the aluminum. I also used velcro to hold the components in my aluminum thrower and haven’t had a problem with that either.
If you were to do a wooden mobo, I would just recommend ribbing it on the inside (top to bottom, not side to side), that way it won’t get pulled forward or backwards too easily from the weight of the shell n parts. Also reinforce the bolts holding the mobo to the frame with larger OD washers. This will help evenly distribute the pressure on the mobo, thus decreasing any possible warpage or bending of the wood. You’ll be surprised what a 30 lb proton pack can require to hold it together.
There’s nothing wrong with mounting all the electricals to an aluminum board. I’m assuming you’re using a kit for your lights, and as far as I can tell from pictures, they don’t ground through the mounting holes, so there’s no fear of energizing the motherboard if you use metal risers to mount the boards.
My motherboard is made of high density fibreboard, same stuff riot shields are made of. Used it because my dad’s work had it going spare. It’s lasted 5 years so far, had no issue with it
I can take some pictures of how I mounted my electronics to the inside of my Mobo if you would like. I went into this whole thing having NO idea what I was doing, and I’m still not sure exactly how I got through it, but thanks to some fine folks here on the board I did. And I even managed to get full lights and sound into my pack for the first time ever. I am really happy with how it turned out. I think in the end you will find that the benefits to knowing you have a metal and sturdy mobo will outweigh the concerns you may have. Just take your time. That’s the best advice I can give.
