Ive looked around at ALICE packs and the cheapest i could find was about £40. Then this one came up on fleabay and i won it for £16

that material is AMAZING… guys.. we NEED to find out where they sell this stuff in the USA & what its called… this would KILL foamcore right away in terms of being stronger with just adding enough weight to be worth it for the longterm durability… the only problem i can see is it can be easily dented… which could chip paint and look horrible in the long run if you happen to hit it pretty hard against something (during a party, CON and such )
Looks like it’s just a TAD pricey. You can buy a shell cheaper then a few sheets of the stuff:

Decided to make the gun mount box out of solid wood for two reasons, 1: im pretty much out of dibond now lol 2: i can use it for a mounting point onto the motherboard which will give it a bit of extra strength if the gun gets knocked or anything.

Yea, definitely a good idea to make the gun mount solid. I can probably lift my pack by the gun mount and my pack is all MDF and very heavy haha.
More progress today. Got busy with the filling and sanding. All the edges needed to be filled from where i cut and bent the dibond and a few other places needed a little filler. The sanding took aaaaages and made a serious mess of me and my patio lol. Still a little to do around the gearbox/gun mount but ive made all the mess the wife will allow for one day hehe. Looking good though i think…

Question though, why stack layers of MDF for your Cyclotron base? Couldn’t you have just done two layers to save weight and put a few blocks between them with a hard skin around the outside?
Just worried your shoulders are gonna take a pounding if it gets too heavy. I went with plywood and it’s only 20 pounds and I still get bruised shoulders after a few hours of wearing it.

Yeah i am watching the weight quite closely. I did the layers of MDF like that for strength really and through lack of experience at this kind of thing (this is the first time ive ever tried anything like this). I do plan to rout out some of the back to reduce the weight slightly and of course give me somewhere to route the wires for the lights/sound.
So far the whole thing weighs 12.2 lbs minus the Alice frame.
12 pounds? Possibly, but our packs weigh 12 pounds total, but thats with sync generators and spacers made from only insulation foam, and the grank and gear boxes made from light weight plastic electrical boxes. (That does include our guns, and the alice frame as well though.)
Most mfd based packs, when completed weigh in around 25-30 pounds minimum.
Yeah she is going to go up in weight no doubt as theres plenty of bits left to fit and i havent even started the gun yet. Still thought she was more than 12lbs at this stage though so i was pleasantly surprised
Been playing some more today. Made a HGA from some left over drainpipe and MDF, made the inner part of the booster, the two tubes that come out of the power cell, made and fitted mounting brackets for the booster and HGA and strengthened the whole upper part as i wasnt happy with it.
Ach! The Booster Tube doesn’t go that far down into the EDA! :shock: That front panel is completely flat running from the Power Cell side of the EDA to the PPD.
Edit Wait… is that just a small bit left on the base of the tube, rather than you having cut into the front plate of the EDA?
Was wondering that too Ben. Think it’s just a “tab” on the base of the booster tube that will be cut off when it’s attached.
That’s is really good looking. I was seriously wondering where you got that aluminum bumper. When I realized that it wasn’t aluminum at all. Great work, man. You sure fooled me.

Sorry mate, should have explained that bit lol… I made a boo boo on my EDA and it ended up 6mm too short thus the booster tube wouldnt fit. I was always planning to have the tube go right the way into it and secure to the inside bottom of the EDA to help with the whole strength of that part of the pack.
So ive had to chop the front plate out a bit so the tube would fit where it is supposed to go. I now need to make a new front plate and fit it on. The PPD is just sitting there, it isnt fitted on as yet, hence that being in the wrong position too
lol yeah i was itching to try my silver spray paint so i did the resin bumper to see how it would come out. The bump stop is a solid lump of allu though
I got the GB belt buckle for £10 from fleabay mate.
