Anyone ever ship their Pack?

Just curious.

I’m taking a trip east to west coast later this year. Although my Pack isn’t quite done yet, I wanted to take it along for an event. Of course heavy-duty packaging will be involved.

So…Has anyone here ever shipped their pack long distance via UPS or Fed-Ex?

If so, how did it go ? Any tips?

Thanks , Steve

I know that fifthrider has done it before and gbcreel is doing it this week.

It was not via UPS or FedEx but i shipped my last pack one from Germany to Australia. Quite a long distance, hehe.

Packed it really well in a wooden box but somehow the bumper broke so we shipped the bumper back and forth again to let me fix it.

when are you needing to ship? I ask because if you have time, I highly suggest doing this >>> CARRYING CASE FOR PROTON PACK.

I shipped mine from “Chicago” to San Diego and it virtually arrived unharmed. I only had to fix the injector tubes which were only super glued on to begin with. and its return trip from San Diego to “Chicago”, there was NOTHING to fix. it was in perfect condition.

What’s the pack made out of? That makes a big difference in how well it will survive such a trip.

oh, and if you decide to go with your own case, which I strongly recommend, you want your inner dimensions as

and if looking on ebay, look for “shipping case”; thats what I have used that gave the best results

youre outta your mind dude! dont pay more than $100 for a case (pre-shippping) . there are a couple on eBay right now for $90 shipped

raider57, I just found someone on eBay selling the exact one I have. in fact, I just bought a second one from him for my other pack., $93 shipped! pm me and I’ll send you the auction info; he has 6 cases left

All,

I defer to Keoni as the expert for cases. Both he and I made two separate cases from the same source object. Keoni still has his and the one I made went to one Mr. Ernest Hudson. Ernie’s never complained about his ( not even sure if he’s used it ) and we just read Keoni’s story above. I witness his pack’s state upon arrival and before departure and I gotta tell ya, those cases are some bad-ass perfection for shipping.

There’s a tutorial over on Proptopia about how to carve out the foam in these cases and what kind of warning label to put on the inside in the event of customs inspection. I’d post it here but I’ve got about 30 seconds to read, write and post.

Raider57 and I are going to the same place this fall. I’ll watch this thread with great interest.

Thanks for the info, keoni! That looks to be a superbly durable case.

What shipping method did you use to get the case at 93 bucks shipped to Illinios?

My quick research ends up with shipping alone MUCH higher than the case cost to PA

Pack is an alkaline fiberglass shell with bolted on components, pretty strong!

the auction says “$43.68 UPS Ground”.. I wasnt given a shipping option other than what was listed.

oh, ya know what. eBay automatically puts my zip code put in for a shipping quote.

but it shouldnt be that much going from Massachusetts (where the seller is) to you in Pennsylvania

Item in Massachusetts…? PM Sent…

EDIT:OK , I found the right one now.

Thanks keoni !!

Hi keoni, I got one of the shipping cases. Looks like it will work great.

I could jump up and down on that thing without damage!

One question though, when shipping (UPS or Fed Ex) is there any way to secure the case so no one could steal the contents?

I suppose I could add a couple latches with locks or something.

You think locks are neccessary ? I’d hate to pay $ and receive an empty case!

~Steve

I dont have any locks on mine; but I was told, and Im not sure by who, that “they (the carriers) may need to look at the contents within the container so it cant have locks on it”

and my aunt just told me the other day (she works for UPS) that unless there is at least of 2" packing around it, UPS WILL NOT cover any damages the occur. like I said before though; I have shipped mine twice and only once was there damage and that was a weak spot held together by super glue. So it hasnt been an issue for me, but still something to think about when choosing a carrier

-John

I wouldn’t trust UPS to pay for any damages. There’s plenty of complaints about them and FedEx online about not paying claims. If you’re lucky you’ll get $100 out of them no matter how much insurance you pay for.

That said, if you don’t buy insurance you won’t have any gounds to sue them to get them to pay up if they do damage it.

[sarcasm]UPS is the greatest carrier ever. I would trust them with my life.[/sarcasm]
