I’ve noticed something interesting recently. Some GB prop builders I’ve seen and met on here don’t think their props look good enough when it comes to looking extremely close to the movies.
Fore example, I’ve seen (up-close) a Proton Pack that looks so much like the real thing I can’t tell the difference. But most of the time the owner thinks there’s something wrong with it. And Ectos that may not be Cadillacs, but using certain wagons as substitutes are probably the most inventive things I’ve ever seen. So why don’t they like what they’ve made? I think it has something to do with how some artists feel about there work. Some think their art is ■■■■, but everyone loves it. I know I’m not as good as other people when it comes to building props, but I’m still proud of what I made. Basically, I want to try and understand what would make a prop builder insecure of his/her work?
Speak your insight on this topic and maybe we’ll find out together
I don’t think its so much insecurity as opposed to the ambition to improve your props. I never really finish anything I make. Always adding and replacing parts, that’s not because I think its bad. I just want to make it better
I think a lot of the members here are insecure about sharing thier props not only because they’re intimidated by some of the great replicas that have been built but also because of the severe arrogance of the majority of the building community that look down on many of the builds that are not to “thier” standards.
Providing a positive critique means providing positive encouragement. I’ve hardly ever seen members here do such a thing. Even with the “pros” the unprofessionalism and grotesquely arrogant comments are enough to make any artist cringe.
Ive noticed some people comment on others and well you look at the peoples props who are making the comments and i think they should really have another look at there’s before pointing out other people inaccuracies.
I strongly disagree with that statement. Overall I think this is a very friendly forum and community and is very welcoming to new members and their props. I know there are criticisms, but I feel they are constructive and said with no malice intended. Only in a handful of instances have I seen bad comments left and they have been regarding personal matters that involve props.
Yeah that can be true. But I only really see it happen when original posts ask people how it could be improved
insecure? YES!!! My pack is only like 43% accurate!!!
I used to but then I figured there’s no sense in it. My pack right now is good enough for me. I think we’ve all become spoiled with the wealth of reference material and information on the props. Otherwise we’d still be pausing the movie to study details.
I think there are very talented people with saws and tools and access to machining equipment and connections, talented people with cardboard and hot glue and there are people with construction paper and Elmer’s Glue. I strive to make a better pack one day but I’ll probably never be the guy who buys all the parts. Not that there’s anything wrong with it by any means. Even some people with amazing looking stuff will nitpick themselves at times it seems.
I think there are many awesome parts out there to be bought, then at some point its funny to see people buying a booster tube or proton gun handles. I’m like “It’s pipe!” I don’t think it’s ever been negative comments so much as less interest, encouragement etc. I’m guilty of it too, though if I see someone with a custom job or something that closely resembles a proton pack I try to comment. I honestly, don’t comment too much on “here’s my shell with the parts on it” Again, not that there’s anything wrong with it. It’s the route to go to really get great results. They’re great most of the time, but I just I guess have lost interest in the “same ol, same ol” so to speak.
I guess with all the resources and stuff out there, we’ve become a bit jaded with “assembly line” packs. :vinzclortho: I don’t know even though I have some money to dump on a pack, I really haven’t yet. I just have the tubing, resistors and switches. Maybe I’ll get started when it gets warmer.
“If it’s not screen accurate, its ■■■■!!!” I think it ends up being what you’re striving for, personally. The average person in public will likely never realize if you’re close enough or “hey thats a resin this” or “your bumper is wrong” If you have something black on your back with wires and stickers, you’re a hero easily. All that said, I have received some great compliments on my stuff, and even I KNOW its far from the best.
I said that… and it wasnt directed at any props and wasnt a reply to somebody trying to show off their work. It was directed at somobody who had been telling me what I can and cannot do with a length of MDF and a saw. Obviously somebody who isnt willing to try and create something they are going to be happy with and give up when they think it looks “ok”
That somebody was you…
If you made something and you like it the way it is then nobody can tell you its bad, because its what you want it to be. Im sorry if when I make things I cant settle for it not being how I want it to be and If I cant get it right, I keep trying till i do. But if you’re not totally happy with something and show it to others to ask what THEY think it needs, dont throw it back in their face when they give you their opinion.
I dont know anyone who would reply to a “showing off” topic saying aggressive negative comments. Other than those who have already been banned for such things…
Hmm, bull. It was directed at my pack, in fact in the conversation that you made that comment you made a few rather snide remarks about my pack. Regardless if it was a show off thread you still made those remarks, and they still apply to what I said. Ironicly enough I went back and reread what you had said and again I had never asked for your opinion and yet you still delivered it full of arrogence and a firm holyer-than-thou attitude that is a huge problem with the way people comment on certain props.
I was nice enough not to name names, but since you went ahead and did it for me, yes you are one of the problems in why people are “insecure” with thier props.
a friend tried to get me to date a girl with herpes once. I said no thanks. plus she was bipolar. now that I think about it, maybe they weren’t such a good friend after all.
Whatever mate… I don’t even care about you or anything you do or make. If you made something that impressed me then I’d comment to say well done. But if not.. I wouldn’t bother honouring you with my time. I wouldn’t bash it for no reason… If people are insecure about their props… Then dont show them off, simple as. But if someone makes a comment about something you made that you dont agree with then give as good as you get. That’s all I was doing when YOU tried to tell me I couldn’t make an accurate pack for under £50. Nice to see you replied once I showed pics… Oh no wait… You didn’t…
