Awesome gun handles found at Home Depot

You could also dye them.

I’ve always heard you should give it an extra long time to dry in the case of the stickies. I hear clear coat will only prolong the problem..

i grabbed some of these today, and they are sweet. i sanded off the ‘made in usa’ and ‘patent pending’ then hit 'em with a coat of primer. let that dry, they hit 'em with some flat black. i let 'em dry a good 5hrs and they are sticky. plus, i dont think spray paint was the way to go, cuz when i fitted them onto my handles some of the paint smeared off, so i don’t think its gonna stick too good. but they look so rad right now!

and btw, they are made of a thick rubber, and i’m not so sure they would take a dye.

we’ll see what other ideas folks come up with.

For painting rubber, use black latex house paint.. indoor or outdoor would be fine, so long as its waterproof once dried (outdoor is the safe bet.)

The problem with painting these kind of rubber grips is they leach oils from the rubber and paint will either not stick or will remain tacky, same goes for some plastic bottles. I doubt very much that paint will adhere no matter what you do but I would love to see someone prove me wrong.

irri, i’ll see what i can do to prove you wrong, cause i really want these grips to work! maybe a bath in india ink for a few hours? we’ll see.

Well…I didnt thinj it would work…but i be damned…IT WORKED

I took my sticky as hell grips, rolled them in baby powder, dusted the powder off, and well…IT IS NOT STICKY ANYMORE!

It is a shade lighter now, but not sticky.

I will get some pics later to show the slight color change.

Yeah, talc up the sticky stuff… Will make them a nice gun metal too…

Here are my grips after the powder. Even if the powder wears off, it is easy to add more later. And to a side effect, it make it look more “dusty” if you leave a little on.

Yeah, I was surprised powder works as well. I do hate that “baby powder” smell though.. LOL!

Latex paint will dry, because it’s basically air drying liquid plastic that is inert, and won’t react to anything. In a nutshell, anything with a included chemical drier accelerator can chemically eact and become tacky.. anything however that air dries will not react.

Has anyone tried dipping them in Plasti-dip insted of the spray? What about auto vinyl spray?

John

Since they were just discovered a day or so ago, I don’t think so. Plastic dip also has drying chemicals in it, and might melt them or react, much like the spray paint did.

Got a pair! Love a find like this. Though I likely won’t be using for awhile, probably more or less gathering parts for a future project :whatever: Look great, will wait and see some more results how people try to blacken them. They do look great painted Zander. Especially compared to my “grips”

on an update…mine have gotten less sticky over the last 48hrs. i think the key is just letting the paint dry for a LONG time. they don’t seem to be crakcing or peeling at all either.

The real test will be seeing what the paint does if you hold the gun for an extended period of time.

yeah, that will be the test. in a nother week or so i was planning on messing around with the thrower a bit, just to see how the grips handle it. but i want to be 100% sure they have had a chance to fully dry first.

I got a pair of these too, but I haven’t tried to paint them yet. I have a paint pen I got from the craft store that I thought about using. Think that would work?

probably. someone mentioned dying them.. that would be the best route (i think)because it’s not a layer of color, rather the handle itself is changed. When I dyed my elbow pads, the vinyl logo took the dye really fast, especially when using a simmering bath. I use simmering baths to do many things.

I’m going to home depot tomorrow after work

In the grand scheme of things it’s funny to think that this manufacturer made us an almost perfect product, that I’d pay 10X retail for, without ever knowing it.
