Bonding aluminium?

is there any commercially available adhesive that will bond aluminium to aluminum or is a soldering iron the best method?

Thanks

Really depends on exactly how you want it bonded, what sort of stress it’ll be under, and the amount of metal to metal contact.

Metal Epoxy like JB Weld will do a great job for most things - but for others you’ll need to weld or braise your metal together.

A soldering iron WILL NOT work.

Good post…thanks guys

Gorilla glue claims to do the job. You’re supposed to clamp it while its drying though.

Brazing or welding are the only options (without the use of fasteners)..

you might want to look up" brownells steel bed". it’s an atomized steel bearing epoxy somewhat commonly used in gunsmithing.

As a side note, steel bed can be a little difficult to work with if mistakes are not caught before the cure process begins. Mistakes can only be fixed with a chisel and some elbow grease which may destroy or at least damage softer metals.

But those two pieces of aluminum will be affixed as permanent as permanent can be short of actual welding.

wow that stuff is sick

With welding or brazing, keep in mind brazing is much simpler.Aluminum welding requires some specialized equipment and a great deal more skill.

I would stay away from Durafix or anything like it. I’ve used these products before and have been nothing but disappointed. The melting temperature varies greatly, and you’re more likely to melt your aluminum piece before the rod even begins to deform.

I’ve used good old JB Weld on aluminum and have been pretty happy. It doesn’t resist torsion very well, but I can live with that.
