Cheap and simple Ion Knob/Shock Mount

Take about 12 fender washers and sandwich them in between 11 smaller rubber washers using a 2" clevis pin to hold them and secure it with a hitch pin. It’s really close and simple to make. I used 3/8 X 1½ fender washers and 3/8 X 1¼ rubber washers.

Sounds interesting-- any pics?

that method has been an inexpensive, good looking alternative for a long time, but I never heard of using rubber between the two, that sounds like an interesting idea. I’d like to see pics too.

Rubber washers sounds like an expensive idea. I just bought for little rubber washers for a pke I’m building and those were like a buck. I imagine you can’t get more than two per package with larger ones, and I think you’d need somehting like 11 of them?

Course regular washers might be just as expensive. But I think they’re only like 14c each or something if I remember right.

Clevis pin sounds interesting if you don’t want to have a screw head on the end, but the GB2 packs did have a screw head on the end. The GB1 packs didn’t though.

Here are pictures. I bought all the hardware from OSH hardware store. The Fender washers were about 5 for a $1 and the rubber washers were about 59¢ each, Clevis pin was $1.69 and the hitch pin was 59¢. I used rubber washers to cut down on weight plus it will actually absorb some of the impact when it gets hit.

Here are all the components:

The finished item compared to Stefan’s plan.

It is attached to a mock-up bumper (mine is not ready yet).

I bought an extra washer for the underside of the bumper.

The clevis pin comes in large sizes if your bumper is thicker.

Ya know man…sigh… Where the hell were you last week. HA but seriously good idea with rubber. Especially like the idea of “absorbing” hits. good idea with the hitch pin too. I hate see either a - or a + for the screw driver slot. looks nice and clean without them.

Yeah, I have something similar on my current pack. Its different size washers, stacked on a bolt. I hit them with black spray paint then sanded away most of it to give them a more dirty, “used” look.

It definitely works well as a shock mount if you can’t afford the machined ones offered by the community.

For those concerned about “accurate” GB2 packs - I found a manufacturer of Slotted Clevis Pins. They do have an online store, but their main business is pressure pipes and conduits for the energy industry. I don’t know the dimensions they make/carry or what their minimum order requirements are. They only ship to domestic U.S.

The only problem with this solution is that this it moves the build from “Cheap and Simple” to “Costly and Complicated”. If its that important to be accurate, consider purchasing one of the custom-made aluminum knobs offered by others on this site.

wow, that bumper is pristine. you just gave me a great tool for this year. last year i coiled thick soldering wire around a cut-short 1/2 inch pvc. it looked good and was a last minute improvisation, but this looks 10x more professional. thanks for the idea bro.

edit: i ESPECIALLY love the cotter pin at the bottom. nice easy disassembling that wont go anywhere.

I read this post this morning, and i went to HomeDepot after work and picked up the parts! I think it came out good! Thanks for the suggestion!

I used a Bolt instead of the clevis pin though..I couldnt find one that was long enough. I am going to grind down the head of the bolt to make it more round…

Great idea. I built mine with a socket head cap screw. I love it.

Installed!

I just realized in the pics, that the bumper is backwards…I will fix that tomorrow…

But it looks good!
