Con-Versation!.

Thanks for the book Jim. I enjoyed it. I am also on the bandwagon for wanting an ongoing with you involved. It’s great to have someone who actually listens to our input. As a matter of fact you asked for my input on Con-Volution at C2E2 this year. I was surprised that you had flagged me down to ask me about the book and even more surprised when I picked up the issue and noticed that you had actually taken my input to heart and put it toward making the book better. I can only say that I was the Ghostbuster with the dreadlocks that you talked to on Friday and that I would once again like to thank you for actually listening to the fans.

Can’t say I’m keeping up with the latest releases since I collect all of my arcs in trade format, but I’m on the bandwagon to want an Ghostbusters ongoing series.

That right there’s a problem. Having worked on a comic series as kind of up and down as GB, the “wait-for-the-trade” mentality, while totally understandable, kills smaller books like Ghostbusters. It killed TMNT. You can’t have trasdes if the books don’t sell well enough to warrant it, and you certainly can’t have an ongoing unless the current books are selling either. WftT is a bit better when you’re talking the big leagues like Batman or Spiderman, but trust me when I tell you that not buying the individual issues on smaller books really does work against it.

That said though, I think everyone who’s all for an ongoing book REALLY needs to actually tell IDW, either via email or through their message boards. The people who count when it comes to those sorts of things don’t come out to these websites unless there’s some kind of legal problem brewing!

In fairness, the lousy Distribution deal and lack of readily available trades to keep people up to date didn’t help TMNT either.

Still, you are in general right, and I’m usually buying the GB books and then if I buy the trade later I give the issues away to try to encourage readership.

Trust me dude, the number of conversations I had with those in charge, there was no way they were going to put trades out when they were losing money on the comics they were putting out at the time. The reason there were no trades of the later stuff was because it wasn’t even breaking even. The lousy distro deal didn’t mean they couldn’t put trades out and sell them in comic shops, which is what they really should have done with the old stuff right out the gate, it’s just that the book people they had contracts with had no intention of publishing the trades either or distributing them into the higher profile book stores (over the comic stores).

All that is beside the point though – it has more to do with the guys counting the money than anything else. If the comics aren’t selling, they’re going to be less inclined to put more money into making a trade paperback that’s just as likely to float the same way the comics it’s made of did. It costs much more to publish a full GN or TPB than it does to publish a monthly book. It’s also the same dollar issue that prevents an ongoing from happening. If sales on the testers are poor, then an ongoing won’t happen. The good thing is that, so far, the comics are selling okay. Con-Volution has apparently sold out, and with two heavy hitters on the next book, I’m sure things will go the same way for the next book.

I bought a copy of Con-volution, and loved it. Great work on the book guys! I would love to see you take on another GB book, or a whole bunch for that matter!

I agree!

I liked this book. It wasn’t the greatest, but it was still a lot of fun. I would have preferred a different artist though, the art felt a bit rushed.

Thanks, again, everyone. Really. I hate this electronic medium and its inability to really express how heartfelt my thanks are for everyone who bought and liked Con-Volution.

Or just bought it

Here’s to an ongoing!

Jim!

Oh, YEAH, man - you were of great help! Keith and I doff our nightvision goggles to ya for that!
