When I get them, I’ll start with Acetone ( nail polish remover ) and go on from there. Best spot to try would be the bottom of Tony’s shoes.
Capt, I know you know what you’re doin, but I’d feel better just typing & posting: be careful acetone will melt the plastic as well as the paint and may even fuse the two together!
there, now i feel better
Hey Slay!
Thanks, buddy. Yeah, I know Acetone will eat some plastics as will other solvents, which is why it should be tested on an area that doesn’t show…like the bottom of his shoe. ![]()
Hope it works. If not I suppose an alternate option would be to paint Nunzio to match, though I like the way he looks better so I’d prefer to de-paint Tony if possible. Need I say how we shouldn’t have to be doing any of this in the first place?
What would we do for fun, then?
Ray and Tony showed up on Friday. First thing I did was to re unite the Brothers, Tony is wearing too much makeup.
The other difference between them is that Tony is made from a different type of plastic. If you tap on Tony with your finger nail, he “thunks” while Nunzio “ticks”, so my best guess is Tony is polypropylene based while Nunzio is styrene based. Like Slaysghosts mentioned, Styrene reacts to Acetone, let’s pour some into a clear styrene cup.
You can see the reaction right away, the styrene gets cloudy and starts to melt. Give it about 20 minutes and this happens.
So, important safety tip: don’t get Nunzio near the Acetone or he could end up looking like the cup.
I did try Isopropyl Alcohol first, but it did not remove the paint from Tony, but the Acetone did. Just to be sure, try a little on the bottom of Tony’s shoe before you go full tilt removing the Blue paint. What you need are a few dozen Q-tips, some paper towels, a glass dish or cup and some Acetone (nail polish remover).
One more safety tip, make sure you are in a well ventelated area when you do this, otherwise it’s pretty straight forward. Dip the Q-tip in the Acetone, daub it off on a paper towel and start rubbibg the paint off of Tony. The tip will get fulll of Blue rather quick, don’t keep scrubbing as you will just be moving the paint around, dip the clean end in the Acetone and keep going. To maintain a Blue cast to Tony, you don’t want to clean every speck of paint off of him, leave some in the creases of the figure and don’t “polish” the high spots.
Make sure you start with a clean Q-tip when you do Tony’s shoes and hair, you don’t want any of the Blue paint to mix over into them. For the face area, I pulled some of the cotton off the end so it wasn’t as large and I could control the removal of paint. I didn’t want to “erase” his eye or mouth paint job. After about 45 minutes, Tony is a closer match to his brother.
Just to be sure that the Acetone didn’t have any residual effects on Tony, I gave him a good scrubbing with some dish detergent.
Here’s a better side by side shot to show Tony is now as transparent as Nunzio. I did touch up Tony’s teeth with some white paint as they weren’t as bright as Nunzio’s.
I just had to do this pic.
Awesome! I am doing this with my Tony. thanks for the tutorial Capt!
magnificent
Ok, hopefully this will help some people and be useful:
This is my Courtroom Egon Spengler
He is painted w/ a couple of very thin layers of Tamiya Light Grey (brush) & Testors Dullcote (spray)
His glasses are also now movie accurate w/ a silver & black frame
Vest outline is from two pieces of tape, it gives it the raised collar it needs w/out having to mix, mold, & dry putty.
His vest is painted w/ a mix of Tamiya Pure White & the Light Grey
His tie is painted w/ a mix of Trans Red and Trans Blue (Trans Purple cocktail)
Few of my Custom Proton Pack Decals
Couple of paint touch ups here and there
Neutrona Wands have been painted as well
Peter’s wand is painted “on” and Egon’s “off”
We’re the best, we’re the beautiful
Thanks for checkin’ them out!
nice job!
Hey Slay!
I think this is one is very useful, just the kind of idea I’d like people to post. :nicejobyoudid:
What kind of tape did you use for doing this? I ask because some have textures to them and others do not. Also, why use the trasnparent colors on his necktie?
Goodnight New York, you’ve been a terrible audience!
Awesome work, Slays. ![]()
Thanks joe and kingpin!
Capt, I used some left over testors tape I had. It’s smooth and has no other texture to it other than the paint. I saw that Egon’s tie had a design to it and it was sorta purple in color, so I just used trans colors so the design is still there and put a clear coat on it to make it shiny silk against the matte dullcote of the suit.
so I picked up a bottle of 100% Acetone on my lunch break today, and tonight I got rid of that annoying Smurf Blue that Matty painted Tony with. I took it a little further then the Capt did, I started using Q-tips and scrubbing, but I decided I wanted him as close to Nunzio as possible - which basically meant pouring the Acetone right on Tony and scrubbing him with every tool at my disposal. I probably “took a little too much off the top” but I’m happy with him. I need to scrub some more blueness of his face, and then go in and add some details like darkening the hair (I thought Matty painted his hair too dark too) and basically trying to detail him to look more like his brother - add dark circles around the eyes, add “electro-cuffs” to his hands, etc - gonna take a while to get him just right, but here’s what I have so far…
here’s a better photo. looking at it now, I think Im gonna take off every single shred of blue paint that I can find. I just prefer him to be ‘transparent’. some of you will probably tell me I ruined him, I dont care.
woah, play it cool hotshot, lol. I think he looks great and say go for it, the blue highlights you left look outta place, knock em out
Vastly improved, looks like I’ll be getting my own bottle of acetone.
update…
no longer a Smurf Zombie. he actually looks like a ghost now. I have to paint in some details to match Nunzio but I’m happy with the blue paint removal. maybe if Matty had not gone overboard with the detailed ugly neon blue paint and kept him looking more like his brother, we would have paid $22 instead of $25, oh well.
I fixed my Tony as well. Was surprised at how effortlessly the paint came off. Thanks to Capt once again for the tutorial that made this possible.
here’s some caps I took from my GB2 dvd (when are we gonna get the blu ray?!)
some noticeable differences between movie Ray (and Egon), and figure Ray…
movie Ray: brown/grey plaid jacket, forest green shirt, black (or very dark gree) tie with maroon (they look horizontal in some shots, but they look diagonal in other shots) stripes, dark grey? pants
figure Ray: brown jacket with black speckled pattern, blue/green shirt, black tie with red diagonal stripes, black pants
the paint job on his face (though its the ‘squished pixie’ head alot of us have received already) is pretty crisp, but the jacket is a poor excuse for ‘plaid’
for those of you who are going to make a custom Courtroom Battle Egon: dark grey jacket & pants, lighter grey sweater vest, white dress shirt, purple? tie with lighter speckled spots, watch on left hand
my extra CRB Peter wont be here for about a week, but I’m looking forward to converting him to CRB Egon… I’m debating on cutting Tony’s feet off (the plastic is softer then Nunzio) and ‘resetting’ them at an angle so he’s permanently in ‘flight mode’ (I have a few of the clear plastic flight ‘claws’ as seen in Capts photo above) which will leave me with an extra Nunzio figure, I wonder what I should do with him.
close-ups of the Scoleri Bros… Nunzios eyes are HUGE! I wonder if the figures eyes can be altered to match his on-screen counterpart…
