My conclusion on Egon’s tie was a burgundy with a yellow polka dot pattern, though it could be a paisley of some sort. The images just aren’t clear enough, I’m afraid. But that was the closet I could come up with from memory after seeing GB2 in theatres last year.
As for Ray, his tie appears to be (and this is what I went with) a very dark green, with thin navy blue and orange stripes (touching against each other) running horizontal across it. His tie should also be squared at the bottom, much like the tie he wears in GB1 when they exit the bank (in fact, all of their outfits are identical in style, and only the colors are really different).
Also, a tip for anyone wanting to repaint Ray (which I imagine will be quite a few people), sponge brushes (stippled) produce a pretty close match to the texture of tweed. I experimented with this on my World of the Psychic Venkman, and was pretty pleased with the result. I plan to redo my Courtroom Ray custom with this technique, as well as my Apartment Venkman.
Along the lines of courtroom buster fixits, does anyone have any recommendations for adding pin striping? Venkman needs dark blue (very dark blue) pin stripes on his suit (visible when he’s on the witness stand), and I would really rather not mask (I can never get the tape aligned correctly to save my life, let alone at this scale).
Taking a closer look at the plaid design, looks to me that it’s Dark Green or Blue for the wider stripes and Dark Maroon for the thinner on a Brown background, but that’s using my crappy netbook. Anyone make a better call on this?
Hey C!
Thanks for joining in. Saw your WOTP Venkman and yeah, the stippling looks real good. :nicejobyoudid: As to the stripes on Courtroom Venkman, I don’t think they would show up at this scale, like you’ve said, you don’t see them untill the close-up on the stand. Getting the stripes evenly spaced while following the contours of the suit would be a nightmare.
That being said, I think I came up with a way to make the Plaid on Ray’s Jacket, in theory, anyway. My idea is to make a silicon stamp of a section of the pattern and use different color paints to make the plaid. It’s either that or hand paint it in and I’d much rather use a stamp.
You’re right on Ray’s tie. Looks like the blue and green are split evenly in the space between each red or orange stripe (can’t tell for sure the color, as it looks different at times). Egon’s tie appears to be a bit more complex than I originally thought. It has the dot pattern, but there’s also striping, which I had thought was caused by movement.
If you mean Ray, Cap, his jacket appears to be more of a brown in the film, with either a black or dark brown plaid pattern on it. It looks more like a purple on the figure, which, given the other colors such as his shirt, I assume was based on the shot of them laughing after their first go at the Scoleri’s.
Thanks for the compliment on my WotP Venkman, Cap. I’m thinking of giving him a black wash to better match the jacket he wears in the scene, but I’m a bit fearful I may screw it up. As for the stripes on CR Venkman, I agree, it’d be tedious. I may give masking a shot, or possibly glue. I’ll post pics if I give it a go, though. It’s one of those things I noticed when I put together a CR Venkman costume, and I’ve wanted to fix it since.
If you guys want to change things up a bit, the Harvey Dent Movie Masters figure fits in line scale-wise with these. Since Winston doesn’t get to wear a pack, he’d be a great fit.
Yeah, I used Dent for my WotP Venkman. They’re a good alternative line, that’s significantly less expensive than the GB line. There’re quite a few figures in the Batman line that wear suits, too.
Yeah, Ray’s stupid jacket. I’m thinking that Wardrobe would have tried tie in all the colors to make Ray presentable, so when I tackle his jacket I think I’ll use a Brown base color with Dark Green, Dark Blue and Dark Red for the plaid, then lighter versions for his tie…unless I make the Tie Decals, then darker versions of whatever colors they turn out to be.
You were thinking of giving Peter’s coat a wash to make it match the movie jacket. I’d like to suggest that you mix up a slightly darker version of the paint and dry brush/stipple the color on instead. It shouldn’t add any to the nice texture you already have, but it shouild give it the “tweedy” look you want to have. An old toothbrush would work well for applying the paint in that way, just use a light touch and build up the color.
Hey Vinnie!
Long time, no hear. Thanks for putting in your 2 cents.
Well, the only issue with doing a dry brush is that the lighter color is the “outside” color, that surrounds the black color, if that makes sense. I’ll play around with it I guess, and see what gets the closest results. It was really easy to do the texture, so, other than stripping the paint, it’d be a fairly simple prospect.
I tried something a little different. I wanted his vest to be a separate piece so that his tie could be alternated inside or out of it. I also wanted it to come over his belt, and to sculpt a vest over his belt would eliminate his waist swivel.
I used a rubbery shirt from one of recent Star Trek movie figures I happened to have lying around from another custom. I had to do some cutting of the shirt to make it into a lower V neck, and I ended up removing the back and some of the sides of it to prevent it from bunching up.
As you can see I didn’t use the proton pack jacket, and the reason for that is because the proton pack jacket is too tight to fit well with this particular piece, whereas the Dark Knight jackets have a little extra room. Hoping those packless torsos and proton pack straps come to fruition so I can just give him a removable pack.
The biggest problem with this method was painting the vest. It isn’t a harder rubbery material like the jackets, it’s VERY flexible, and this causes the paint to flake off very easily. Ultimately I think I am onto something, but I wouldn’t really recommend using one of those shirts as the base for the vest. Ideally it should be something that’s harder and thinner. Something that’s already the right color would be a big help as well. Any ideas?
I don’t, i was just left with small scraps that I threw out. I know there has to be better options out there anyway though. I’m thinking maybe even buying a sheet of extremely thin pvc or vinyl, which you can probably get in the appropriate color.
it can be done multiple ways, for my regular busters I used green ribbon (I got it from a gbfans member) and super glued the ends to the bottom of the pack frame on the sides… also a rubber band painted green and super glued the same way would work. I think I might try it myself - do they all buckle the waist strap, or just Peter?
