Custom Mattel Ghostbusters WIP *November 2012 Update*

Hello,

This is my first post, so be gentle, lol.

Like everyone else, I was really excited about Mattel doing movie-accurate GB figs, but figured I’d throw a little extra detail on them to make them a bit more accurate.

Ray was the first one I tackled. He turned out ok, there’s a few things I’ll do different with the other three, but overall I’m pleased:) (I’m still working on scratchbuilding a pair of Ecto-Goggles for him though.) Also, BIG thanks to everyone on the forum who posts reference pics because they were INSANELY helpful to getting all the little details I couldn’t make out as accurate as possible!

*I do plan on using an extra headsculpt from the new Labcoat Ray and swapping it out. The original is just too. . .off for me, lol.

Onto the pics~

VERY NICE! Awsome details!

You’ve just given me a couple of good ideas for when I get back home & continue customizing my figs!

Impressive! I actually just finished up adding on the Pack Waist Strap onto my figures. Here I thought I was going to be the first to do it to find your post.

Good job mate! Yours actually looks BETTER than mine! What did you use for the waist straps?

Thanks guys for the feedback!

I was surprised to not see more people add the waist strap as it really completes the whole look and feel of the proton pack and jumpsuit.

For the waist strap pieces I used various sized vinyl bands (the ones that come in action figure packages to keep them secure) and also for the shoulder strap extensions and belt holster for the strap.

WOah!

Nice brushwork!

:crunch:

Did you hand paint the labels or print them out?

Very nice; it looks like you added some brass to the zippers (as well as adding the boot zippers).

Really nice customs!!!

Nice job on the waist strap!! I see myself doing this in a couple of weeks!

:crunch:

Could you throw in some close ups of the straps?

excellent, excellent work, the straps really bring the figures together. I don’t give a lot of these out, but you’ve earned it. :crunch:

Thanks again everyone for all the feedback!

The labels were actually hand painted, (except for the red warning label on the back of the trap, that was borrowed from the 1/6 scale gear.) I thought about printing out some water slide decals, but tried out painting them and they seemed to be passable so I went with it, lol.

I’ll get some close-up shots of the straps soon, I’ve started Ray’s Ecto-Goggles so I’ll probably post the straps along with an update of the goggles.

Also swapped out Ray’s old head for the new Lab Coat Ray and it looks a LOT better already, but I do plan on giving Ray a new hairsculpt once the goggles are done, with his hair having more of a ‘laying down’ look.

Ray looks great.Great custom and his trap looks very detailed and much better than Mattels one.

How is the trap being held on to the web belt?

The trap is actually being held onto the belt by a make-shift holster. I did it similar to how Mattel did theirs, with a simulated clip and a vinyl strap keeping it tucked up against the holster.

Here’s a closer shot of the waist strap. Doing the small strap that closes over the buckle was fun, lol. Sorta putting off doing the other three’s waist straps, lol. Working on the proton packs for the most part:)

and finally a WIP of Ray’s goggles. Not 100% accurate I know, but at such a small scale, I’m just happy they’re turning out as OK as they are, lol. Still have to build the rest of the lenses and then I’ll be sculpting the bottom of Ray’s hair, adding the straps, then sculpting the hair that sits on top and rest over the side straps.

It’s getting there!

Awsome work!

Green cut mat, styrene pieces, Citadel Paints and toy parts…are you in my workshop? Excellent start on the goggles!

Hey Mereel nice work, but I don’t fully understand the simulated clip on the belt for the trap?I see you modified the thingy where the wire from the belt gizmo goes. How the trap stays on there?

This might be a stupid question but I think it’s really cool!

Ha! Did you make ray his own little bald cap?

Captcyan - it’s crazy just how small the work area becomes on these mats, lol. Before I know it, I have one small little area that’s actually clean enough to work amongst the piles of fodder.

kenny_a - the clip is purely cosmetic, the black vinyl strap going around from edge of the holster to the other is what the trap actually rests ‘in.’ the trap handle is what keeps the trap from falling through the loop. Overall, works pretty well.

Ray’s head looks pretty funny at the moment, sculpted the bottom of his hair and so he’s current rocking a ‘horseshoe’ hair kinda thing, lol.

Pics soon!

The goggles and new hair are finally finished! Also sanded down the eyebrows and painted some softer ones in there, Mattel’s always seemed too fierce to me, lol.

Anyway, here’s some pics. Didn’t take time to set up a proper shoot, but it works:) Really happy with how the head turned out. . .next up, the Ghost Sniffer!

Holy ■■■■ that’s awesome!
